Virginia is doing a vote on if gay marriage should be legally banned in the state and I talked to my mother about it briefly earlier. Her arguement against homomarriage was this:
Why do gays need to get married? They can't have children. And if they are allowed to get married they will want to adopt, and I don't want that.

I'm all for unions that have the same benefits as marriage does, but I don't think fullout marriage should be allowed if the church they belong to doesn't want it.

Of course not. If someone belong to a church saying that the way they live is wrong, there's some serious hypocrisy in their lives. Saying "I believe in everything my church teaches me except the bit that says I'm bad because of who I am" just isn't that bright.

But marriage is a legal thing, and the religious aspects of it are smoke and mirrors. If laws are being passed about something, what does any church's opinion matter outside of being another group of potential constituents?

So yeah, gay marriage. No problem with it. It beats coming up with some kind of civil union that grants the same rights, while being called something else for the sake of semantics.

I saw something really weird on TV about a gay couple who had a biologically related child. The one man had his partner's sister do the whole artificial insemination thing so that their child would share the DNA of both parents. They were concerned about medical things like tissue donation if needed and stuff and were having a hard time adopting in their state. Pretty extreme (insane that the woman would be a surrogate mother like that, mad respect for helping family).

oh god, not that arugment again. I think everyone here knows how wishywashing your mother's opinion is. We have no facts to back up any fear in gay people rasing kids.

Does she even know any gay people?
