Your favorite games then and now

To make this easy, we won't go back all that far. My question is what were you playing five years ago vs. what you're playing now? Throw in some 2005 stuff or upcoming games if, like me, you haven't played a whole lot yet in 2006. Oh, and do you think your tastes changed for better or worse?

I tried to find old posts, but I think everything before 2002 was deleted (?). TNL has changed so much since then, that I think it'll be interesting to see the replies. Lots of former chans I bet.

2001
We'll call this the f-chan phase. Time of the Dreamcast for me, quickly followed up by the PS2/Xbox/GC. I can't really remember why, but TNL at the time was big on importing Dreamcast games, and I was part of the problem. Favorite games around the time were:

I've definitely moved out of the chan phase, but still enjoy a good Japanese game from time to time. The only games from my previous list that I could still play are Halo and Devil May Cry, the rest is either junk or played out.

My tastes have changed for the better, imo. I don't think I was ever really a fan of most of the games I was playing five years ago. It was just a combination of that's what everyone I knew was playing, and I liked collecting the import DC games. Now that I pretty much play whatever catches my eye, I have a lot more fun with games.

This thread is a prime example of the many benefits of not fronting. When I read your post, I can't help but wonder why you liked the things you liked. If you didn't actually like what you were playing at the time, why were you playing it? Be yourself. Like what you like, not what is deemed likable by others.

For me, I like what I like then, and I like what I like now. It's a convenient thing to say (and a cliche thing to say), but when I think back at what I've played over the years, I can't think of a period where I was playing something I didn't actually like, simply to fit in with what was cool at the time. There was no "chan phase" for me --I appreciated western games back then, and still do, just as I still appreciate those Japanese games I enjoyed then.

The only real "phase" I went through, as far as I can remember, was a stint where I tried to be more interested in 2D fighters than I actually was, because at the time (DC era) they were prevalent among the "hardcore." Even then, I wasn't doing something I didn't like, because I liked fighters, and still do, but I was perhaps trying to be more into them than I really was.

That said, when I look back, I will admit that it is often almost embarrassing thinking about my online personality at the time, and the way I presented myself on the Internet. I would think a lot of TNLers probably feel the same, looking back on how they acted in the early days. For me, it's not so much in regards to my attitude, as I think I've always tried to be a nice person, but more in regards to my maturity level.

In 2001 I played a shit-ton of Alien Front Online, and CvS2 at home. And I was at the arcade EVERY DAY playing Tekken Tag. I even got a part-time job there so I could play after hours.

Now, I play a lot of XBLA games, and whenever I can find people to play with, I rock some Tekken 5. On the road I play Tekken PSP, and I think the only thing that'll ever make me take that out of the disc drive is MK: Unchained. The arcade I worked at 5 years ago closed down about 6 months ago, so no more arcade Tekken for me :(

I think that was the last board crash. Too bad no one has that stuf archived.

Pretty sure my tastes haven't changed much if at all. I've lost interest in ranking things I like since then though, so no lists from me.

I can't remember that far back, but given that it's about how things have changed. I used to play a lot of shooters, I'd say that the time around Ikaruga's relase was one of the greatest times I've had with video games.
The score attack board was smoking hot and the comunity felt great. Now I can't really get back into shooter even though I've tried. I don't have the motivation to get my ass kicked for weeks without anything to show for it.

I need instant gratifiction, online play in stuff like Halo 2 and achivements is what I have gone for lately. But that shit is getting old too. I can't tolerate lag, cheating and the absolute scum of the earth much longer and not a single achivement so far has felt as good as a great highscore.

In the past few years, I've almost completely lost my taste for JRPGs. Other than that, the type of games I play hasn't changed

In 2001 I was playing a lot of Dreamcast games, and random JRPGs on PSX. Favorite games were Grandia, Soul Calibur, Lunar 2: EB, and the Final Fantasy series. After DC and, later in the year, Gamefan, got axed I kind of stopped playing games for a while.

Now I'm playing way less RPGs due to their stagnation. I guess I'm not into actiony games now.
