think of it this way.
a texture....no matter how well drawn will always be a piece of flat 2-d art.
this is applied to a polygon which is of course flat. sure you can spend thousands of polys to make rounded edges (or arms...muscles....whatever) but it takes a helluva lot of horse power.
bump mapping adds height if you will to the actual texture....thus decreasing the number of polys needed to make the texture seem fleshed out. it helps stuff seem more organic and alive than using millions of polys.
......oooOOOOOOOOOOooooooooohhh!
you so smart. the girl in your sig....her music any good?
Yep. It adds bumps to the textures, so that rocks can have small ridges in them and cloth can have creases without large amounts of poly increasing.
It's usually a subtle effect, and kind of hard to spot. If you play Halo (where it's all over), you probably won't even notice it until you turn your flashlight onto bumpmapped surfaces in dark areas and see how the light and shadows work.
ohh play Rogue Leader on a good TV bumpmappin gup the wazooo in that one too
best place to see it is on the hoth level fly low to the ground and look at the snow youll see all kinds of bumps and ridges in it
....halo....halo....is that that new angel simulation game on the seXbox?
bump-mapping is what I am doing to this post
see?
