-Renato "Babalu" Sobral was released from his contract due to the incidents that happened during his UFC 74 bout against David Heath. Dana White again talked about how it would of been worse had Babalu had an arm, leg or ankle. Still, Dana feels the fans turned on him and said he is out of his contract and out of the company due to his actions.
GSP vs. Koscheck: Great to see GSP dominate Koscheck on the ground. Goes to show that being the best at one thing (wrestling) doesn't mean you're the best in the cage. Would have been nice to get a submission or knock out but the decision was clearly in GSP's favor by the end of the 3rd.
Couture vs. Gonzaga: Randy is the fucking man without a doubt. Not the most flashy fighter ever but still one of the most fun to watch as he kicks peoples ass. And WTF was up with Gonzaga getting a time-out for getting blood in his eyes? You can't just say "hey, I can't see" and then CONTINUE to fight after getting a 30 second rest and even a short visit from the ring doc (who in fact did wipe his eyes). Herb Dean fucked that one up big time. The second he confirmed that Gonzaga was saying he couldn't see, the fight is over. Herb even said it to him during the incident, something like “if you can’t see, you can’t fight” yet he didn’t stop the fight. And Gonzaga should know you can't ask the ref to stop the fight so you can clean the blood out of your eyes. What a fucking loser.
Babalu: I didn't see this fight on the PPV but have read a little about what he did. Nothing makes me more annoyed than a fighter that refuses to release a submission when the ref calls for it. Reminds me of clips I’ve seen of Royce Gracie and how he seemed to try and break bones *after* his opponent had already tapped. Total douche bag move. I understand there is a ton of adrenaline involved with these situations and you can't break a submission instantly, but if the ref has to tell you twice or put his hands on you to break a hold and you still don’t break it, you're fucking up. You're not being professional and you're only hurting the sport as a whole. Good to see Dana kicked his ass out of the UFC for it because there’s no place in the sport for that kind of shit.
The only time I remember Royce holding a submission was the choke on Gerard Gordeau in UFC 1, because Gordeau bit him on the ear earlier in the fight. Gordeau was a dirty piece of shit and deserved it (he is the guy that blinded Yuki Nakai with an eye gouge) so fuck him.
Royce is kind of a dick though, so it wouldn't really surprise me if he had held other submissions.
i dont even know how he would have had blood in his eyes considering the blood was coming out UNDER his eyes via the nostrils. from what i remember when he said he couldn't see i saw NO blood anywhere near his eyes. regardless, Herb Dean is the WORST ref i have ever seen. his numerous instant stoppages are a testimate to this.
off the top of my head i remember several of his earlier UFC matches having delayed relinquish of a hold but that was because the refs didn't know wtf to look for and didn't stop the match. sure Grace might have seen the tap and held on a bit longer knowing this but who can say for sure. i think it was his first match with Shamrock that Ken tapped, the ref stood there and the fighters stood there. they started fighting again, another submission and finally after what seemed like 15 seconds of tapping the match was called. i could be blurring two different matches together.
Yep, Gonzaga was completely overwhelmed by the ass kicking he was taking and wanted a rest without losing the fight ... and Herb Dean gave him exactly what he wanted.
I actually think the 1 point penalty (totally meaningless anyway) was Dean's way of making up for the time-out he gave Gonzaga earlier in the round. After the fact he knew he got hustled so he took the first chance he had to make Gonzaga pay for it (it's very rare to get a point deduction for holding the fence without getting a warning first).
But yeah I agree, Dean is far from the top of the heap when it comes to MMA refs.
I was really, really impressed by Cap. Seriously. The guy has been the underdog on so many cards. I understand how he's the underdog when considering his age and his lack of "overall athletic ability" but he's sorta the Joe Montana of MMA. Not the greatest arm (Marino), not the greatest athletic ability (Steve Young, Randall Cunningham, John Elway), but what he has is heart and the will to persevere.
I realize that kind of stuff is 100% cliche these days, but Randy has the heart of a champion.
He will not be denied.
wait. did you just say people refer to Couture as having a "lack of athletic ability"?
(by "cap" i assume you meant Capt. America, aka Couture?)
i lol'ed when the ESPN poster boy for mma used the jumbotron to find where the guy was behind him. good shit. suprised nobody did that sooner.
