All Consoles From Here On Will One Day Die

How does that make you feel?

I'm assuming here that resourceful people will and probably have thought of ways around this by now. Chao's thread about his dying Xbox reminded me that that was probably the first of the "complicated" consoles, and a lot of them have already died on people. I'm pretty sure it's been hacked to shit and back, though, and it's perfectly possible to run it with any standard retail hard drive and keep playing your games way into the future.

I still bust out the NES and SNES from time to time, and I kind of feel that they'll last forever. How are the 360 and PS3 going to work in about 10 years? The 360 can run with no HDD and a memory card, but is the PS3 married to it? The more complicated they make these systems, the less reliable they become. Hard drives, while I really do appreciate all they bring to the table, kind of suck for longevity.

We need new harddrive technology. Maybe big memory cards that the Wii and PSP can use will be the way to go. The less moving parts the better.

Older consoles 'die' too. I had two different Dreamcasts crap out on me, my NES never lived into the new millennium, etc. Seems like everything but the Genesis breaks down eventually.

My Dreamcast was the first system to ever crap out on me =( I got a replacement and kind of worried about it until I didn't play it for 3 years and now I don't care.

NES's have like two parts to them, they're easy to keep going forever.

PS - I think epmode's and nomi's 360s both died recently, RIP.

Samsung I believe it is, has that new HDD technology that combines flash media and standard HDD technology. While the drives are still relatively small (40 gigs I believe) they are quite small, use much less energy, have faster access times, and may end up lasting longer than standard drives and may be what the video game industry needs.

My very first NES still works just needs some playing with, I don't have it set up because I have a top loader, though and I bet this would fix your nes as well, a change of the cart connectors would probably make it work like day one. My launch SNES still works like a champ.


As far as the main topic goes, yeah I'm not happy about the idea that one day all these newer systems will stop working. Maybe if there were easier direct ways to back up save files and things like that, it wouldn't be such a horrible prospect.

I hate that, when my Xbox died, there were a few saves I couldn't bring over, inexplicably.

I mean, PSO, yeah I can understand (besides, who cares about PSO anymore), but Metal Slug 3? Why the fuck can't I copy that save to a memory card??

You could always stick a new 2.5" SATA HD into the PS3. Assuming they still make them 10 years from now.

You'l be able to download or emulate all these games in the future anyway. Who gives a fuck?

One of the reasons I like PC gaming: Anything that's ever been released can be reinstalled in some fashion. It might be a pain in the ass but any PC, no matter how powerful or new, can still find a way to run anything back to when games used text for graphics.

Pretty much. Hello VC, hello XBLA, hello Gametap, hello ePSXe, etc. We'll be able to bust out some GoW on our Zboz Fluxcapacitor, though probably sans online content.
