I have a scarification on my back that, at the time it was done, was considered very large. I'm not regret. Not many people did it at the time either, so a lot of my opinions are likely outdated. Some things I've learned though, are:
A lot of people that do them don't really know what they are doing or don't use the best method. So much like line-heavy tattoos, larger pieces are a safer bet (for example, the bigger a celtic knot is, the less likely it will be to grow together in a few years). This is what I meant by probably outdated-most of the people I'm talking about have had time to learn from their mistakes and refine their technique since then.
Scarification (torch/scalpel or hook method at least) isn't really much more uncomfortable than a heavy handed tattoo, but healing from it is way more intense, takes longer, and obviously requires more care.
They don't hold up over time like ink does, but they look really dope if you get a tan. Ink+scar= omega rad.
Judging from how unintentionally gained scars have changed on my body over the years, I'd be really reluctant to have this done for fear that it would morph into some unrecognizable blob of raised scar tissue after a few months. Most examples I've seen on BME and such were very, very fresh... I'd be curious to see fresh pics compared to a pic of years and years later.
This is why I say bigger is better. My back looked best at about 2 or 3 years old, it was dark colored and the tissue actually stood up. Now, at about 8 or 9 years, it is only really visible when I get some sun- it doesn't tan when the rest of me does- and isn't quite as sharp, but it still looks good.
I have one on my back. It was a mistake. Not that I don't love the way it looks, but the way it was performed was in the "basement surgery" style, and that was a huge mistake. I don't think anything has hurt more in my life.
Scars don't look good regardless of what they're from or for.
done it, don't exactly regret it but it's sort of lackluster. Eventually the majority of them healed to a paleish skintone, even though it was really deep. Kinda boring, really.
I guess being emo, such habits come naturally.
