So Apollo Creed can single handily build a rocket and fly to the moon but we can't figure out how to pull a giant squid from the water without killing it? That's fucked up.

The still pic is much better than the blurry youtube video.
You're thinking of last winter when they took underwater pictures of one taking some bait which appeared on National Geographic online. Those were nice pics and IIRC, it was also about 3 meters, so likely a juvenile too. My theory is, given how smart squid are, the babies would possibly be less experienced thereby making them less elusive than the adults and easier to catch?
The Japanese science team/s tracking them (probably using sperm whale movements which is how they caught the pics from last year) have really been on top of shedding new light on this species. Shame they killed it though. But the video said they have never survived after being caught anyways (why not have a giant tank on board all ready to go? :p ). Also a shame that giant manta ray was killed.
I want to go deep sea fishing someday. If I discover a fish I'm naming it something immature.
The guy pulling out the tentacles was probably all giddy ...
CARLAMALRIII!!!!
Sad they killed it. But cool they found one.
Heres the Associated Press story. They used a smaller squid to feed it. Was also a female.

Man, that totally sucks. They should leave them alone. Fucking Japs and their fishing.
That would make a lot of calamari, saki-ika, or whatever you'd like. This is what happens when you go to work hungry.
I watched a special on Discovery the other day with some professors spending days trying to catch one of these things. They caught a couple of really small baby ones, but they kept killing them. Towards the end of the show they figured out the method of capturing the squids was causing too much trauma to their bodies and causing them to die. They figured out a better device for capturing them, but once they successfully got a live one it still died and they had no clue why. I think they mentioned it could have been the light level or the pressurization.
I guess thats kind of good news. If the giant squid try to take over all we gotta do is turn a spotlight on them to halt the invasion.
theres a video link up on cnns main page now. cant link it because its a java popup
