I need one. What's the best? 30GB minimum. Physical size of the player matters not.
What has the best sound quality? Do Ipods still have headphone jacks that are too quiet? Any of them play emulators? Any of them have any cool hacked opperating systems or other homebrew software? What ones have the least amount of DRM bullshit?
Pros: Hold all of your shit without having to carry around physical media, small, charge instead of using batteries, and some can be used for extra storage for transfers.
Cons: In my experience, they last under year. I've still not had an mp3 player last a full year. (The one I have now is almost there just a few more months!) They're also fucking expensive.
I have an iRiver. I love it. iPods are alright but I've never owned one.
I've had iPods since they came out (lol trendy) and have always been pleased. They may cost more, but I've always been on macs and Apple really lives up to their warranties. Buy the protection plan for $50 and you're guaranteed a new, free iPod with no hassle.
Plus, since Apple updates the iPods so often, you can get the previous model on refurb or clearance off of the website and still get the full warranty options.
I currently have a 40GB 3rd generation iPod (before the click wheel; this has the four buttons on the top) and it's been wonderful for me.

I can speak for iPod:
Pros:
- Great interface, makes it easy navigate and organize songs.
- Runs very fast--no "now loading" screens that I've seen on other players.
- Great form factor--best looking players still.
- Since it's popular, it's got the most support. Most options for legally downloading video, most accessories. I have an iPod port in my car that keeps the unit charged and lets me control it through my stereo--highly doubt I could find something comparable for non-iPod players.
- Quality hardware, good customer support.
- Easily operates as an external hard drive.
Cons:
- Requires iTunes software. I personally think iTunes is great for organizing music and it's very simple and elegant to use--but the software is unreasonably demanding of resources, and you can't pull music off the iPod without using third party programs (that's half true; you can browse the files in Explorer, but iTunes renames them and puts them into large folders, making it hard to find specific files).
- Price? People have always complained about iPod price, though the 30GB only costs $250 and I haven't really seen cheaper except for some low-quality crap I wouldn't spend money on.
- Video playback only supports Apple's format. Have to convert any non-MP4 (I think) videos to play them on iPod.
