Yeah I'm not having luck in IE or FireFox.

I signed up fine using Dipstick's advice.
1. From the main page, click the green "sign in" button.
2. On the next page, click the green button that says "register now" on the bottom of the left-hand side. Do not use the fields on the right side of the page to sign in.
3. The next page will have a link to sign in. Use it and follow the remaining steps.
The registration should go through fine from there.
The MS retail site had a similar quirk back when I used it, IIRC.
