Something games have lost with time, I've come to realize. When it comes to good games in terms of memorable characters and the like, classics dominate. New stuff doesn't have that feel of likable characters and all that crap...
SNK comes to mind when I think of personality. Many of their games have so much character that it sometimes overshadows other aspects of the games...
Think about it.
3-D polygon puppets cannot hold a candle to superbly animated 2-D sprites.

But you have to admit, if a company has good artists, they can make some pretty memorable poly characters.
I thought the boxers in Ready to Rumble were dripping with personality. Same with Virtua Fighter 2, 3, and 4. Sonic Adventure too. And Mario 64.
I think it boils down to the talent and intent of the developer. Make a game too realistic, and you lose some personality.
Actually, I can only think of a handful of Neo games that have a lot of personality in the characters. Metal Slug, Samurai Showdown, a few of the KOF characters, and not much else. Maybe Sengoku 3.

Yup. Those like 100 poly Final Fantasy 7 characters with zero textures have more character than most any game character now.Quote:

How much personality did the Frog in Frogger exude? Or how about the crazy ship in "Yars Revenge"!
Lest us not forget the amazing character design displayed by the main character in Adventure! A better character design I have never seen in all my days!

My friend Mike got a tattoo on his back a few weeks ago that had purple fire around a crescent-eclipsed sun (think Iori and Kyo combined) and stated along those same things, though only in reference to fighting games.
To me, this sounds like one of those 2D/3D or challenge/length or kiddie/mature or graphic/gameplay debates, where the one person starting the debate is asking for something that s/he feels is gone...
... but in truth what they're asking for is around, they just have to find it.
And let's all be fair; it wasn't Metal Slug who started the poly/sprite debate in this thread, it was N-Fanboy #002 Supermario that did.
I agree with you there too. I'll use another Final Fantasy as example. In Final Fantasy 6, the little sprites that you see in game are just dripping with personality, especially with all the little goofy animations they have in the game. Then you look at Amano's full detailed artwork, and it just rips the soul out of them, imho.Quote:
