I feel inspired to play the GC version of this on Dolphin because this thread popped up.
Or, at least try it out again and see if it's any better than two years ago.
For the record Dolphin has come a long way, this game looks legit as fuck.
There's a big, beautiful overworld, which you will never see more than once because the warping ability makes it pointless. If you're just looking for bugs or poes I guess you would see it a bit more, but the main quest doesn't require that much backtracking.
It's as good as Wind Waker, and almost as charming. I liked playing with the cats in castle town.
I disagree with pretty much everything said here. I had not a single problem with the controls at all, and thought they brought some of the freshest ideas to the series in a long ass time. New puzzles, and a combat system that was 10x more interesting than any of the previous entries. It also had a crazy ass villain in Ghirahim and one of the most endearing Zelda's in the franchise. I thought the ability to upgrade items, and having your shield slowly break if you didn't time your blocks right really added to the game. SS has some of the best dungeon design, and boss fights in the series EASILY, a long with a higher level of challenge than what was seen in the last few 3D entries. Hell it has a boss rush mode that rewards you for playing it. The game isn't perfect and I'll give you Fi can get annoying, but I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as the internet acts like it is. For me TP and SS show a huge leap forward in dungeon design, that shit's on MM,OoT, and WW (which has the weakest dungeons of the series IMHO). As a side note if you were saying these things about the 2 DS games I would be in full agreement with you, but not for SS.
I can understand that to an extent, I found in ST specially, it was annoying to not be able to go where I wanted and being forced into these exact paths. Though I saw the Sky in SS as more like the ocean in Wind Waker, just smaller and with more interesting things to do. They did nail that feeling of despair in the environment and overworld of TP. I don't think that's what they were going for though in SS, and I liked it's lighter/happier environments. It was a bit more airy and almost naive to the real dangers and I thought that fit as a contrast to TP, and as a good starting point for the story. I do hope we see the typical Zelda pattern here, and once the next console one comes out people actual give SS a fair try.
I think I would have really liked SS more with an overworld on the surface. You COULD use the sky, but you could also travel on the ground more. It more seems like each has a level and a dungeon, it doesn't feel as unified or as much like a world. Though I don't mind the happy go lucky sentiment, for whatever reason I wasn't as moved artistically by it.
(When does gannon officially appear in the series? After SS?)
I would rather press a button to roll a bomb instead of doing a Wii bowling motion. This was a case of Nintendo trying to justify their motion controls. It's playable but I think traditional controls work better.Quote:

I think a lot of people disappointed with Skyward Sword did give it a fair try. Finch played through the whole game (I think) and I gave it over 10 hours. You make it sound like it's a typical pattern for Zelda games to be victimized at first. It has a 93/100 on Metacritic so I don't think the internet is underrating it at all. Forums are a bit more critical but from what I have seen it's more positive than negative reactions.Quote:

I will go back to where I left off some time given that the pacing and handholding of the remaining parts might be different although I don't like the sound of the fetch quest stuff people mention from later in the game.
I definitely agree that having some kind of surface overworld would have been a good thing. Gannon official shows up in OoT, there are a few games that take place before that but not many.
For some things but not others, a better balance could have been made. The sword combat is way deeper and more interesting than pressing the A button. While SS used Wii Sports Resort method for the Bow aiming, I do think what they did in TP is the ideal. It's far more entertaining, and way more accurate/faster than using dual analogs to aim.
10 hours is pretty early into the game, if I remember right my first play through clocked in the 50 - 60 hour mark.Quote:

I disagree, and I'm not saying you or Finch didn't give it a chance but the greater internet at larger hardly did. Read some other forums and the response was "Motion controls, fuck this it sucks." with out every putting the disc into a machine.Quote:

There is definitely a typical Zelda pattern. People hated WW when it was first announced and came out, it was lauded for it's look and for being kiddy, then Twilight Princess released and now WW was a master piece and people hated TP. Here we are at a similar stage, people hate SS and now love TP. I'm not saying it goes on here at TNL, but read some other forums. Zelda fans are insane and definitely follow this asinine pattern of hating on what ever just got released and loving it years later.
Personally I really hope Nintendo carries over a lot of the things they introduced in SS into the next console entry. There were a lot of ideas there that were fresh to the series that I think should stick around.
