Those of you that have registered to gamasutra (its free so if the privacy policy is fine and you're curious about developer stuff, sign up) may find this interesting. It's a paper that considers what separates casual, hobbiest, and etremist as well as other interesting demographic information. Check it out and post what you think.
i think they spent way way way way too much time on the math and equations and weighting of what a ahrdcore gamer is IMHO

do they give a reason why people keep buying those horrorific Spec Ops games?
I think they said that the "likes violent games" line was too broad, but the article is closed now, and I can't remember directly.
Anyways, its just a plan for defining and testing some gamer demographics to use for future marketing , not really developers doing a breakdown on gamers(which would have been a nice read =/ ).
hopefully the "hardcore" group will be larger than expected, so that it doesn't effect games being released here in a negative way, providing the standard is completed and adopted, that is.

Though it may seem like they put too much effort in it, many companies do that much research and much more every day. In fact I definitely wouldn't be surprised if publishers and some developers did the same thing (Though not the same way). After all they have to get their demographics from somewhere.

some times it seems like companies dont do enough research
could be quite the opposite. Its my guess the research leads them to not release certain games. Tobal #1 didn't sell well(my understanding). Tobal 2 would have capitalized on that percentage of the first game's adopters that were interested in a sequel. . . not really giving them much of a reason to want to release it.
Exactly. Sales speak more about a product than a consumers opinion at times. If a game is aimed at a niche demographics and it doesn't sell many copies, it's fine as long as it sells enough since they are aiming for that small demographic.Quote:

When you expect to get mainstream sales from a game and it doesn't sell enough, then you'll be less likely to release another game assuming you are still focusing on that same demographic.

Well, that's kind of what Gamasutra does, they go indepth into topics for people who want that kind of detail or developers/programmers/artists themselves. One of the reasons I love that site, especially for the articles from people who worked on games and give the "What We Did Right/What We Did Wrong/What We Would Have Liked To Do" articles.
