The 8-bit Action/RPG Thread

What are your favorite 8-bit Action/RPGs?

The original Zelda is probably my favorite. The sequel is great too although I don't like it as much as the original.

Wonder Boy 2 and 3 are excellent games, especially 3.

Crystalis, I'm currently playing through for the first time(yeah, I'm a little bit late, 12 years or so). Awesome game and very atypical in genre for SNK.

So my top 3 would be-

1. Legend of Zelda
2. Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap
3. Crystalis

Other ones I like are Golvellius, Lord of the Sword, The Guardian Legend and Faxanadu.

I honestly think WB3 is quite alot better than Zelda. I like all you picks, but I would have issue with the order.

It was a tough pick. In some ways WB3 is the best ARPG of the 8-bit era; it's certainly the best side-scrolling one. It's definitely underrated and a must-own game for fans of the genre.

Neat thread; action/RPG is my favorite genre.

I disliked every Wonder Boy game I've played (except for Monster World) but I think I'll try out the ones listed if they're a/RPGs too. And I think Faxanadu is a real stinker; everything is a shade of ugly brown so I guess the game is monochromatic.

Crystalis is a good favorite of mine, but can't compare to the likes of The Battle of Olympus (best 8-bit action/RPG game), Zelda II, and The Guardian Legend.

And I've put off Golden Axe Warrior for almost a year now...I think I'll try that today.

Yeah, Faxanadu isn't the nicest game to look at, not Falcom's best by any means, but I still like the game.

Battle of Olympus I only played a bit of. I didn't like it; maybe I should give it another try.

Golden Axe Warrior seemed really good from what I briefly played. That game is damn hard to find now, at least offline it is.

The Battle of Olympus is pretty slow and repetitive in the beginning. Though I think once you get the Staff, the game really picks up.

Honestly, I think Faxanadu is pretty solid but there was this one part where I fell in a pit and had to climb out via a ladder. Except every time I got to the top, I'd get instantly shot by an enemy and fall back down. I haven't played it since.

I love action/RPGs. Zelda is easly my favorite. I also (wait, I don't have Zelda... :( ) have StarTropics and Guardian Legend. Oh right, and there's Faria: A World of Mystery and Danger (ah, I like saying the full name) and Ys.

And if you count the TG-16 as 8-bit, Neutopia isn't so bad, even if it's a completely shameless rip-off and isn't half as good as the target of assimilation (Zelda).

Heh. Wonderboy is not a coherenet series. Wonderboy 1, Wonderboy and Wonderboy: Monster's Lair are not part of the same series. You say you liked Monster World. Well in japan, the game that we call Wonderboy 3: Dragon's Trap on SMS is called Wonster World 2. Wonderboy 5 is Monster World 3. There was a Monster World 4 in japan, and it was quite excellent, but it never came out here. I try do differentiate between the Wonderboy and Monster World series, because MW really is infinately better.

Wonderboy 1 was actually released on NES. Youmay know it beter as "Adventure Island".

Out of all the games Sega left in Japan, Monster World IV was the most painful to miss out on.

From what I played on emulator, it's possibly the best game in the series. And I enjoyed every game in the tangled Wonder Boy/Monster World family tree.
