Well, it was a practice stopped in the early 1900's. Back then zoo's also had ethnological exhibitions and big shows. The foreigners showed off local dances and warrior skills. Any self-respecting explorer had to bring home some obscure tribe for public display. These kinds of exhibitions were common all over Europe.

Reading over Master of 7's posts, I just want to say that I am a well-read, educated black man, and he doesn't speak for us at all.
I was talking about the new generation of artists. There will always be a place in my heart for Common, Talib, Mos Def etc.
But in regards to Mos, he fell off of his game a while back. His old stuff is still great, but his new stuff is so watered down that it's arguable whether I can still call him a socially conscious artist anymore.
