Frame Gride (DC): Official Thread

Let's talk about Frame Gride, the medieval mecha masterpiece for Japanese DC from From Software, creators of the Armored Core series and the upcoming Murakumo for XBox.

Jiji and I just put together a TFP feature on it, in case you don't know much about it.

Has anyone here played it? What do you think of it? And does anybody have some strategies they'd like to share? I'm still learning the item/mech customization process myself.

Also, I have some questions about the Armored Core series. If I liked Frame Gride, do you think I'd also like this? Is Armored Core 2: Another Age just an advanced version of AC2, or is it an entirely new game with the AC engine? If so, which is better?

On the item creation process:

You can see the stats of the item you're about to create in the upper left-hand corner. Though I admit, I don't remember what all those stats mean...it's been a while. However, I think the last statistic is usually the FP (frame points?), which are usually provided by the helmet and...the legs, I think?

In my experience, it's really difficult to get the last 2-3 material types. I've been cooking up a utility to edit FG saves to add those materials, but I've been lazy about ordering a Nexus memory card. Everything is done except where the program actually edits the file. I need to get off my ass and get a Nexus card. :P

Make sure you kill your opponent's squires before you deliver the coup de grace. Squires drop materials, and they generally tend to drop what they're made from. The same goes for Frame parts. If you destroy a part of your opponent, when you kill it, you'll receive material(s) from that part.

On Armored Core:

I think you'd like the Armored Core games. I got into them from Frame Gride too, and I really enjoy them. The controls are very similar - tapping X makes you dash, and holding X makes you jump and then fire your boost rockets. Your mecha can hold a rifle or pistol on one arm, a blade (think wrist-mounted lightsaber) on the other, and have weapons mounted on its shoulders as well. Or, if you want, you can replace its arms entirely with dual cannons or missile launchers, and you can replace the legs with a four-legged unit or treads.

The customization aspect is very similar to FG, but more traditional in that you simply buy weapons after earning money from a sortie. The series has somewhat more of a sim bent to it, as you have to worry about your boost rockets overheating and whether your core is too heavy for its legs or drains too much energy for its powerplant.

The AC games are much longer than FG. AC1, AC2, and AC2:AA each have quite a few missions to get through (I hear AA has around a hundred).

Armored Core 2: AA is kind of like an expansion disc for Armored Core 2, except it behaves like a stand-alone game. I'd recommend starting with vanilla Armored Core 2, as it can be found very cheaply, and it doesn't have the now-ancient presentation of the first game on Playstation.

Most sites don't carry FG at all anymore, so I'd recommend watching ebay. They allow DC imports now, and I've seen it show up there a couple of times.

Thanks to this thread I'm reminded that I have Frame Gride. It's a really nice game that I haven't played enough of yet.

Here's a tip: on eBay, try searches for "framegride" as well as "frame gride." That's how I found my copy.
