Nope, sony just drew a contract up with R*/take two so that they would have priority over the releases of games in the franchise for a certain span of time. Had they [sony] actually published the grand theft auto games, you would have never seen them on the xbox/pc much like how you never see sony published games like Ratchet & Clank on other systems. I think the only time where GTA wasn't published by t2 was in Japan where Capcom did it, and I'm not entirely sure of the reason why there.

They didn't need credibility, they needed localization and a distribution network.

The games sold very well in Japan, and III at least was being fairly heavily imported before it got a Japanese release.

Because take 2 doesn't have a branch in Japan, so they licensed publishing rights for that territory.

This is a major score for MS. The holiday rush hasn't even really started yet, and already it's lined up a major exclusive for next year. That is, if this stays exclusive for that long. I don't think things will change, but you never know in the game industry.
