It's ironic and sad that Joust wants to disqualify Super Mario Galaxy for not looking as good as his 360 ports of games that look and play better on PC. When did TNL turn into a bunch of graphics whores? I never thought I'd see the day when TNL would reach a consensus that great gameplay wasn't enough for a game to win GOTY. Your hatred of Nintendo has warped your minds.
Mario Galaxy does not have the best gameplay, theme, art direction, graphics, sound, music, control, or anything else of the year, and it sure as shit is not the best toal package. No one is saying that graphics alone are holding it back. Shut the fuck up already.
Lots of people that aren't busy deepthroating their sixaxis have noticed that Super Mario Galaxy does indeed have some of the best gameplay of this or any other year, perfect theme and art direction for a 3D platformer, and fantastic music and sound. The graphics are attractive, at times gorgeous, and perfectly suit the game. "The graphics aren't HD and the sound isn't 7.1" is the gayest argument against a Mario game that I've ever heard; you should fellate yourself until you drown on your own hate sperm.
I don't know where you got that from, but I think everyone in this thread is talking about how visuals are a part of a total package of considerations when choosing a GOTY, on any system.
I wasn't aware that games on the 360 were all ports and not simultaneous releases or that gameplay was the only thing to consider about a GOTY. I know you have no other choice but to dismiss graphics when discussing the Wii, but that's Nintendo's fault, now isn't it? That doesn't mean that it no longer bears mentioning. The visuals in SMG are great and perfectly suited for the game, but I really hate it when Nintendo fans try and sharpie out the criteria that works against the Wii. It's like visuals no longer count because Nintendo chose last gen hardware.
Correct.
I brought the Wii to my gf's house and her mom got SO INTO TENNIS that she fucking nailed my girl's cat (which was sitting on a nearby coffee table) RIGHT IN THE FACE. It was fucking hilarious.
Anyway I think Mario is a serious contender for GOTY because it really is just about the most fun I've had with a game.
But fun isn't a serious criteria, right? The level designs are tight, varied (constantly throwing new things at you to make it fun throughout,) the gravity changes just add so much to this, it's amazing) and they changed the formula so that it captures the classic 2d feel of platformers more than any other game in the genre, I mean nothing I can think of has come close. Maybe crash bandicoot, but that hardly even felt 3d.
This strikes such a great balance between exploration (without giving you huge levels to wander around in) and streamlined, linear paths. And the game looks great and sounds as good as it needs to.
So here's the question: Why does a game need to be the most amazing audio/visual experience ever to be GOTY? Surely there's a greater emphasis on level design than audio/visual muck. You can dress up a game until it looks beautiful (FF) and it can still have tons of problems (FF). Galaxy manages to keep the entertainment level up for the entirety of the game, as far as I can comment on having finished with the minimum (I can't wait to get the rest). There's no significant dips or slogs, it introduces new challenges at all the right moments. There also aren't ANY bugs that I have run into (not the case with Mario 64, which had a bunch of glitches.) If you look at this from a design perspective, it's pretty much perfect.
So let's have a hypothetical: would you consider an animated-sprite-based 2d game for a GOTY contender? because it wouldn't need the powerhorse 360/ps3 hardware to be gorgeous and deliver a tremendous experience, but it wouldn't provide the hyper-realism and surround sound stuff that you are all quoting as the benchmark to be compared to here.
This is downright ridiculous. SMG is easily GotY material. Maybe not necessarily THE best game of the year, but certainly a contender. It has an amazing soundtrack, incredible gameplay, fantastic art direction, and its just simply a hell of a lot of fun to play. The only aspect of Joust's argument that might have any validity is that the graphics are not up to par with 360 and PS3 games. But honestly I don't think that having next-gen level graphics would put this game over the edge for GotY, or even add much more character and immersion to what is already there. Certainly it would make the game better, but it wouldn't make or break the deal, because the rest of the game is just so damn good. Just not having any interest in 3D platformers is one thing, but to just play the first few levels and then say the gameplay isn't anything special is just plain stupid. A game shouldn't be judged just by the first 30 minutes, and if your argument is that "it just didn't pull me in the way a GotY should", then you better shut the hell up about fun-factor not having any bearing on what merits GotY, because it obviously does.
And while we're on the subject, if we're judging a game by its technical prowess then ME would instantly be knocked out of GotY contender due to its bugs and framerate drops.
Yeah Taekwondo is trying to say what I said but doesn't really add much substance to the argument, he's just saying "OMG NOOBS YOU'RE ALL WRONG"
on a serious note though, Joust, For fucking shame judging a game that you didn't even play based on the first level. That's just fucking retarded. Go play it and then come back.
I'm not saying you're not allowed to have an opinion on the game by looking at it and deciding you're not interested, but you're certainly not allowed to have an informed opinion, and as such I'm gonna go ahead and pretty much discredit anything you have to say about it.
