I had avoided MySpace for years until I created a page to enter an Activision contest. I started the TNL MySpace this month as one of a few things I'm doing to help keep TNL in front of people as a community (since we are not a traditional news and reviews site). I find that people get addicted to this place, then many leave for one reason or another before coming back later and resuming their posting habits. I want good ways to remind them early and ofter that we're here.
I've been helping my friend Scott with Findadeath (FAD) for years now, and have put a lot of time into his fledgling community, which is overall nothing like the community we have here. My goal is to get it up and running and as self-sufficient as possible. I'm doing this for him, and people like Lhadatt and cka and others have done this for me, partly. It's the way sites grow.
I decided that instead of trying to preserve the nerd sanctity of The Next Level, I would send out MySpace invites and get some new people to check us out. I'd say maybe five percent of the FAD crew would fit in here, but we could use some new blood. I did not focus on women: Rather, 90% of FAD is female.
I am not sure what "Incredibles-philosophy" piece you're talking about, Cow, but I think you mean that item I wrote on MySpace after FAD pissed me off royally. Thanks, but that isn't a particularly deep piece either. The MySpace page is just to hang out with people and add an extra dimension to our community spirit. Those bulletins I wrote actuallly got some people to check out the forum, and that is a good thing.
Furthermore, that is my sense of humor in those throwaway bulletins. I'm not making up a personality. At the same time, I don't want that kind of content on TNL, so if Josh sends me 99 questions, I don't mind sending out my answers to 100 people. Some read it; some answer it; some send me messages about it; but all see the TNL logo on their page, and that helps TNL grow in the long run. And all I have to do is shoot out a few quips and be social - just be myself the way I am in the real world, while not making the forum more chatty.
I'm mildly sure I'm not a bridge troll nor a phony account, so I resume dirty worship :)
I've mostly ever socialized with asshats so we're all good then.
I was referring to the little bit that you wrote about Americans' sense of entitlement, and how that relates to how people argue here. (The Incredibles touched on that topic.) It's not "deep," but it doesn't need to be, it's true and it was interesting. You're a self-admitted smart guy, and when you have something to say it's usually worth listening to or talking about.Quote:

You do a good job running these things because you at least take the time to make a funny little survey, and you know how to keep people interested. Everyone respects you for that, except maybe CKA who just wants to kill you.
I can't believe I had to talk to you seriously for a moment instead of just giving you shit. You were acting like my ex-girlfriend or something. "I needs approvals."
And yeah, the forum does need some fresh blood. Just no more idiots please.
Anyone on Ning? I just started using it after hearing about it on podcasts, and it is very impressive.
It's essentially a smart, social-network-creator with a ton of features and customizability. TNL social network:

I signed up to this and made that in literally one minute.
