Are you ready? It's cool! Let's enjoy a great showtime!!
After winning Mark of the Wolves for the 150th time since I got it (a rough estimate, but probably not far off) I decided it was really time to feed my DC a new fighting game, so I picked up Guilty Gear X.
First thought: Holy crap! This game's gorgeous! I had no clue hi-res would make such a difference. I honestly want to go and throttle SNK for sticking with the archaic Geo for so long when MotW could have looked like this, but with better animation.
Second thought: Uh oh. This game is like a better version of Jojo's. Almost exactly. Jojo's is fun for a while, but I like my fighting engines dead serious. GGX doesn't seem to have much of a positional game, just keep jumping at the other guy, keep wailing on him, and whatever you do don't let up.
Third thought: I don't like screeching 80s guitar metal, but this soundtrack is cool in spite of that.
Fourth thought: I'm not sure I like the character design much. It's high quality stuff, but I kept looking around for someone I really wanted to use - Johnny (aka Gambit) and Chipp (aka Strider Hiryu) were the only guys that interested me. And what's up with the dude who fights you with a pool cue?
Fifth thought: Goldarnit, this game's hard! Too many of your later opponents seem able to pound off half your energy in two or three hits, which is frustrating after juggling them for a half an hour and just messing up once and ending up behind.
Sixth thought: One hit kills are gay. Not that the computer ever does them, and not that they're easy to land, but what's fun about that?
So far the game's not bad, but it's not gonna dislodge the holy 2D trinity of KoF '98, MotW and 3rd Strike. Anyone else have thoughts?
