Making a list: Things we like to do in games and things we hate to do
I thought it would be fun to make this list and then pray that developers everywhere stumble accross this thread and become enlightened by it. :) Or whatever.
Stuff I like to do:
*Jump over gaps- Don't know why it's fun. It just is and always has been.
*Triangle jump off walls and swing from grappling hooks- 'Cause it makes me feel like a ninja.:)
*Powerslide around corners- My real car doesn't do that
*Dodge things- Swarm of bullets? Bring it on!
*Combo things- Whether I'm keeping a string of hits together or avoiding the red things as I only kill yellow things...
*Level up- Getting more powerful is cool.
*Finding/buying a more powerful sword- Getting more powerful is cool.
*Finish the game- I don't have time to finish most games. Any game under 20 hours is greatly appreciated.
*Get set back when I continue- I want to be forced to actually make it through a section.
*Run real fast- Sonic is on to something.
*Memorize patterns and have to quickly recall them- Battletoads speederbike style.
*Twitch- my reflexes like to get in on the game.
*Create a character- I end up using my creations more than the set characters.
Things I don't like (hate) to do in games:
*Flip switches- If the switch isn't 1 foot away from the door, I'm not looking for it.
*Hunt for 1-use items to open new areas of play- No, I don't want to have to find the crystal Lee Iaccoca bust to take back to the kitchen and place it in the Lee Iaccoca bust shaped indent in the 'fridge to open the secret tunnel. NOT FUN! Do like Zelda does instead. Zelda also makes you get items to open up new sections of play, but instead of being useless one shot items the items in Zelda actually give you a new ability that you can use for the whole game. A skinny path has a hole blocking Link's progress: Link get's an item that gives him a jump ability. Now a new area is unlocked and Link has a cool new skill to use everywhere. That's the way to do it.
*Gather "X" amount of something to finish a level- I prefer a destination to a scavenger hunt.
*Walk slowly through huge games- If the world is big, don't make it take 9 hours for me to get where I'm going.
