The Grudge List

God of War: It had some cool moments, but a lot of it left a bad taste in my mouth. I felt like everyone who touched it was mistaking high production values for great gameplay, and nobody noticed but me. I never did get to play through the sequel, and I probably won't ever bother.

Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun: Tain and dog$ said it, pretty much. I can't believe that people still namedrop these to try to buy hardcore cred. Ikaruga bores the shit out of me and RS was a profound disappointment because the hype ate away at my brain before I finally did get to play it. I wonder if the US GC Ikaruga sells for a decent amount these days.

I was gonna say the same thing. Dissing memorization-heavy shooters while trumpeting the greatness of R-Type Final is akin to decrying junk food while spraying particles out of your fat mouth filled with McDonald's french fries and bone chip-ridden meat.


Persona - PS1:

I've told this story on here before I think. I played about 45 hours into the first Persona game when it came out whenever that was. I read about, and then fulfilled the requirements to squeeze an extra ten hours out of the end-game in an attempt to see the true ending.

Anyway, the final dungeon is seriously like four hours long -- without a save point. Yes, you see where this is going. By now, I've grown to absolutely loathe everything about the game's battle system, and want nothing except to be done and move on to something else.

Long story short, the final boss kills me. After four hours in this horribly tedious dungeon. Dead. All that time wasted. I could try again, but that would mean reloading before entering the dungeon, leveling up a bunch, and then trudging through with the possibility of dying once more at the hands of the final boss, and losing another four hours.

I was so devastated with frustration at the waste of time, I literally put my head in my hands in cried.

Real tears.

After a bit, more furious at the game than any other in my entire life, I erased the save file. I had to make sure I could never, ever try again, as my stubborn nature almost guaranteed I would at some point if I didn't destroy the file now while still in the clutches of this most profound pain.

This thread is humorous. I don't like a lot of Ikaruga fans but I still like the game and own it for both DC and GC. I don't like Goldeneye but that's because it's a shitty game with terrible controls and poor balancing, and not because of the incredibly true reasons that Grave listed. People are actually asking for it on XBLA? Really? Have they played it since it came out?

A couple hours a week. Sure, you could play it like dog$'s mother-in-law but one of the reasons WoW is so popular is because you don't have to play it like that, you don't have to burn up an entire weekend just trying to get a pretty new hat or whatever. You can sit down, play for a little, and then be on with your life. Unless you've got a raging hardon for being an internet asshole in which case you'll probably lose yourself in Barrens chat and the Night Elf forest for weeks before realizing how long you've playing.

I play them specifically for the production values and 14-year-old-boy-awesomeness-writing, though I do really wonder about people that think it plays better than DMC or NG.

Panzer Dragoon Saga- Insanely over rated and boring as all hell
Nights- Thought it was just very average and didn't appeal to me at all.
Anything with Dance Dance in the title.

It wasn't super popular like Mario or anything but I have come across tons of people on the internet that have played Adventure Island but not Wonder Boy, moreso than the other way around. It's because of the NES' dominance of that era in North America and a lot of gamers being too young to have experienced arcades at the time. It's probably different on message boards with a European majority, though.

Adventure Island isn't hugely different but with a dive in colour and detail, inferior character design, less appealing music (IMO), and slower movement, it's easily the weaker version. Arcade WB, SMS WB, and AI all feel slightly different control-wise but I don't think it's enough to make one stand above the others. SMS WB does have some additional level parts. The "Monster World" sub-series of WB is better than the first game anyway but I still don't like seeing people play only Hudson's version of the original.

Arcana Heart: This game is pretty much everything wrong with fighting games today. It's a game that manages to be more inaccessible than Guilty Gear, contains more stupid generic moe anime bullshit than Melty Blood, and with combos that go on longer than your average game of SSF2T. To top it off not only was the game poorly tested, the developer charged several hundred dollars for a minor upgrade three months after the initial game came out, and was able to shove it down operators throats because they convinced Japan's largest tournament to run the updated version of the game even though they had already had held several qualifiers for the old game (to be fair, the update made for a much better game at a competitive level).

Yet, the US scene has a weird hard-on for this game. Went to a major tournament in Philly about a month back and there were nearly 50 people in a tournament for this game, ugh! Then again, there were just as many people in the Melty Blood tournament and over 100 people in the Guilty Gear tournament, so that's just where that community is heading.

Kingdom Hearts: Fuck this fucking game (fucker). It combines two companies that I just can not stand in a game that is just dreadful in every sense, from the god-awful camera to the awful ship segments to a story I give less than a shit about. There are a lot of bad games out there but there are few I truly despise, and this is one of them.

This thread has been nothing short of pure entertainment.

I'm inclined to defend Ikaruga. No, it isn't the greatest shooter of all time but it is more than excellent.

As for my grudge crap:
Nintendo: For brainwashing the world into thinking that the Japanese invented and perfected videogames. This leads into...
Commodore: For having the worst marketing on the planet and a business strategy that entirely revolved around gobbling up smaller companies instead of actually doing R&D themselves. There was no reason apart from Commodore's stupidity that the C64 and Amiga were marginalized in North America.
Zelda II: Nothing equals the frustration of sitting down to finally finish the game, only to discover that your saves disappeared.
Oblivion: Don't get me wrong. I adore this game. However, while the actual gameplay was a massive improvement over Morrowind, the quest structure was a major step back. Very few quests were mutually exclusive and it was possible to do every questline in a single playthrough - something that wasn't possible in Morrowind. It felt less like a dynamic, living world than Morrowind did thanks to the more gamer-friendly changes.
Cave fanboys: For convincing every shooter developer out there that there's nothing worth making besides bullet hell shooters. And for voting utter garbage like Guwange into the annual Shmups top 25 poll.
