That's generally the approach I've always used as well. It's a delicate balancing act; you don't want to be merciless to the players but you also don't want to give them the impression that you're rigging the game or that they're invincible.

I played 4th edition today. It's the second time I've ever played, and it was a lot of fun. 4th is a lot fucking simpler, and it's all about whooping ass.

I don't think I could get into D&D again even with simpler new rules.
I just grabbed the premade adventure, which is actually pretty damn cool. Nobody has any time for this shit anymore, but really it's a lot simpler and all the PC's are way more badass at low levels.
Playing D&D is the most mind-numbingly boring shit I could think of.
i enjoyed d&d 10 years ago. it was social, you got to be creative and forget real life for a few hours.
