Ok, Gold then. Whatever you want to call the color around the text boxes in front of the art.

I kinda like it now.
The gold is okay, but its way better than the red. The red was just too bold and really drew the attention (imo) away from the art. Now its more subtle and the art stands out.
I dunno about the length you have to scroll on the first page. I mean thats a pretty big main page. The games page itself is a nice length (depending on the review). But I mean theres a lot of dead space on the left and right (mind you I am looking at it now on Firefox 3 and at 1280x800 resolution).
It's nicer than it was. Much cleaner. I don't know how to make a website stand out but I think you did a good job reconciling the print mag with the webpage. I'm surprised you don't have a 1-2-3-4-5 scrolling top story/image box in that first section. You know, like
http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/index.html
or
http://www.nhl.com/
It seems to be the current hotness.
I really like how the content headers or whatever you call them are such a subdued shade of grey so your eyes are drawn to the artwork.
First, you freaks, it's orange, not gold.
I'm still a little conflicted about the main page. One of the main problems with the current homepage is that it's almost completely barren of content, and you had to go to each separate section in order to see what new stuff we've had recently. What I want is for people to hit the homepage, have a lot of interesting stuff to look over, and then hopefully decide to stay longer.
In fact, I haven't even put up all of the stuff on the homepage that I had wanted to. *laughs* But, indeed, I'm well aware that it still needs a lot of tweaking.
As to width, I'm trying to keep 1024x768 users in mind, so everything is locked at being 920px in width. High resolution follks (hell, I'm running 1920 x 1200) may see a lot of empty space on the sides, but maybe that'll help encourage Windows users with such resolution to not maximize their damn browsers! (Plus, hey, want to see a skinny website? Go check out Gamespot.)
I had planned to do this, but the more I've thought about things, the more I don't want the site to be bogged down with Flash. I know 1Up had one of those things, and recently got rid of it, and got nothing but praise for doing so. I really hate all of the moving/rotating crap we have on the current site, and want as little of that as possible, but I know a few people at Play like the rotating main content box, so I might end up losing that one.
Too much moving shit is a big distraction, but you could make a non-animated content box, where you have to click on the boxes to force a move. It's nice to centralize all of the big stories AND be able to put all the artwork pertaining to the stories in one area: the one that your eye is drawn to.
That might be too counter-intuitive though, and it would still clutter up the main image, which is very anti-play.
I mean, I like what you've done with it as it is, so I'm just throwing ideas against the wall. All I know about web site design is from interviews with professional web designers, and I have a feeling a box that didn't animate itself wouldn't really fulfill it's purpose as the vast majority of people wouldn't figure out what to do. Well, not so much figuring out, but their scanning wouldn't pick it up.
Deep yellow/gold here.
Yeah. I understand. I can't wait to see the final product.
Isn't that the truth, Shi? You have this plan you map it out and you even start piecing it together on Dreamweaver or whatever web design program you have. I use notepad myself. And after checking it out. You realize a lot of the stuff you WANTED to do was not feasible.
This I can understand. I know in a post I did earlier here I said to try and make it work on a universal browser. So, you doing that is understandable and I am glad you did.
I hate that shit. Even with Firefox 3, that shit bogs crap down. I think it has a lot to do with not knowing how to minimize the html coding. OR view it on a certain web browser and not check it on another.
After talking here, I realize I need to finish my web design degree.
It's funny that you have that shot of PixelJunk Eden up there. I still really like the site with the dark texture breaking up the otherwise griddy layout. But, looking at that shot, I can almost see some sort of movement breaking it up here and there. Maybe some vector curves in between the sections or something? There's also a lot of space in the logo bar for that, too.
Maybe I'm just exhausted, but that's what popped into my head.
Yeah, I know what you're saying.
I hate to use this as an excuse, but I've kind of toned things down a bit due to having to make sure everything works in IE6. I originally had all of the drop shadows as transparents .pngs, and was able to do some really nice background stuff, but then I decided instead of trying to make two separate skins (one for IE, one for everything else), that for now I'd make on that could be universal and then maybe come up with something a bit nicer looking in the future. I really hate doing that on a "professional" site, but at the same time, I also hate having to build around the stupid fuck-ups of IE6.
That, actually, is "reserved" space for the future log in / profile info for visitors. My goal is to allow people to make accounts (connected to the forums) for various stuff, but it's something that was too big for me to put together, thus will be a kind of "round 2" feature.Quote:

Ah, I get you. Man, IE 6 is an asshole. It really is.
Y'know, I think all web designers should get together and design their webpages however they want, but have a link to an IE6 version that's all text and EXPLOSION.GIF in 14 frames with midis playing in the background so they feel right at home.
