I agree. The first is better.

This is strange. I'm pretty sure almost every dungeon crawl section in that game can be completed in around or less than twenty minutes, and the campaigns are broken up so that instead of arriving in a new city, seeing a story scene, and then getting marching orders to the new dungeon you're supposed to crawl through, most new locations come with extended storyline sections you can relish in while exploring the cities for a long time with no worries about random battles- Slumming at Muse in the beginning, Enrolling in school at Greenhill, staying in Tinto, etc. For someone who likes RPGs for the adventure game aspects, Suikoden 2 is one of the best designed ones out there. You level up quickly, but since the random battle areas are so short they shouldn't really become a chore- or at least not on the level of most other RPGs. I guess the design works for people who aren't really into monotonous random battles themselves and not people who don't mind random battles so long as they can keep building themselves up.Quote:
I cannot bring myself to finish Suikoden II. I got so bored, which sucks because any time it's the story being advanced, it's awesome. Every other time it's terrible and I can't bring myself to care. I'm at the part where I'm going to the Toran republic, due to the way you gain XP in such an insanely awesome fast manner, random battles always feel like a chore because two or three random battles means you'll be up to where you need to be. Yeah it's great for catching up characters, but once you hit that exponential curve (though it's a negative curve) for XP every battle is a trip to tedious boring and "God I just want to get to the next part" with no enjoyment.
Yeah, a lot of people say it's great, but it isn't. I think you're underrating it a little though. It's certainly better than very good, and is almost great, but not quite there. I think the most accurate judgment of its quality would be to say that it is very very fucking good.Quote:
I just want to say that while it is a very good game, Suikoden II is overrated.
Anyone who doesn't give it that specific rating is a fool.
Growlanser is by far the best Playstation RPG. I also liked Vagrant Story.
I'd say Grandia too, but I never played the playstation port.
Normally I'd enjoy a lot of things like that, the first time I tried to play it I felt the same way and attributed it to the fact I had just blown through all of Suikoden which while it kind of put me in the same area I somehow managed to see it through.
I mean, I plan to get back to it maybe I wasn't really in the mood for RPGs, we'll see. But somehow I cannot get into that game as much as I'd like to. I'll try again some other time.
Actually I had another theory based on the fact I couldn't get into Persona 2 for any real reason that maybe I just can't stand to play through Playstation games :/
1. Dragon Quest 7
2. Star Ocean 2
I wouldn't consider FFT or Vagrant Story as RPGs.
Everything about Final Fantasy 7 sucks.
I agree with the FF7 hate. I just couldn't get into it. Never made it past the first disc.
Grandia, Valkyrie Profile, Suikoden and Kartia are some of my faves.
FFIX is trash. Seriously.
This thread is going downhill very fast.
Psone has a lot of neat rpgs, sadly psone polygons have not aged well at all.
Aside from the more common stuff mentioned, like Final Fantasy and what not, one of the most underrated and underplayed rpgs on the psone was Breath of Fire IV I think.
It really hit on everything I love about a jrpg and it still holds up well today. I love the sprite work in that game.
