I actually currently live in the Plantation area. It's certainly a nice area, but as you said, good luck finding jobs that pay what it'd cost to own a home here. Right now, we rent a 1/1 that literally faces a busy highway. It's so close, I can throw an object out of my bedroom window, and I'd easily hit a car in the center lane. Anyway, the rent is just shy of $1,100 with water as the only included utility. Between rent, two cars, insurance, food, utilities, etc etc etc, we're living in the red every month. We figure we'll sacrifice a year of our lives living with her folks, but after that we'll at the very least be in better shape than we are now.
If you can find a couple of decent jobs that will allow you to afford a modest home (maybe a 2/2 or a 3/2) in a halfway decent neighborhood in Plantation (think $300k-$400k for the home) then it might be worth your while.
