Well, since shmups means shoot em ups, I'd say anything that focuses only on shooting and not much else. Contra is a Shmup just like Raiden Fighters is. Mega Man isnt cause it has alot of platforming added to its shooting action. Thats how I sees it.

I think that Shmups FAQ covers it pretty well. They have some pretty good listings in there for shmups classifications as well.
Craft/human/vessel for destruction of some sort. Typically 2D. Since I can't think of one that I would consider a shooter, the game can't have any platforming, just moving and shooting. Typically level based, where the (simple) objective is to just destroy all targets or destroy everything you encounter.

I refuse to use that horrid word "shmup" but I consider everything from Space Invaders to Raiden to Panzer Dragoon to be shooters. If you control a person who primarily walks on the ground like Contra, it's a platform game as far as I'm concerned.
I read the defination of Shmup at the site, but according to it, that means nobody can make anymore shmup games since it's based on a time period which I disagree with. Also limiting it to only 2D sprites is another issue. I consider Panzer Dragoon and Panzer Dragoon Zwei as shmups.
Do we really need a set definition? My general rule is that if a game is in somewhat of a grey area, then it isn't a shooter. Simple enough.
The problem is that everybody has a somewhat different defination of what a shmup is. There are definately the traditional shmups if we just stuck to the basic shoot and dodge in a space ship, but I rather expand it with limits. Many people would consider Zero gunner 2 a shmup, but not Cannon Spike even though they play the same. The difference is one is a helicopter and the other is a person.
Wow, I agree with everything you just said.Quote:

There's a difference between Cannon Spike and Zero Gunner 2. Cannon Spike usually stays in a static "arena" whereas Zero Gunner 2 scrolls. Still, I would consider them both shooters based on their gameplay.
