For one thing, look at her head -- it hits the side of the car on the back window, the angle of highest resistance, yet her face and neck are not only not broken, but show no distortion after impacting the car in the manner it did!

The best of my memory this was a performance art stunt using an actress and a staged car that was swapped while the people on the street weren't paying attention.

You have to be bullshitting all of us. I'm embarrassed to admit I googled the photo and I see nothing that would indicate it's a fake. There is surprisingly little on this photo at all. All I know is that it was also in Time Magazine, May 12, 1947.
