Start drinking again, everything will feel normal.
In all seriousness, I have sleep problems as well though not many that relate to my life after sleep. I usually go to sleep at 5AM and many nights I wake up not knowing who I am and in terrible terror and I usually feel sleepily tired until about 6PM the next day. It's just kind've shit you gotta get used to if there's no medical solution.

Probably my favorite movie from Hitchcock.
A bad inner-ear infection sounds about right for this. But one would think antibiotics would clear that up in a week or so. Going in a different direction here, does the vertigo only happen at home? If so maybe their is something in the house or bedroom you're breathing in that could be causing this?
I've known a few people with vertigo, and their symptoms were exactly like yours.
Basically, it's a crap shoot of things that could cause the vertigo. And, while there are some medicines you can take to ease it's effects, nothing to cure it. Basically, wait it out and it will go away on it's own. It might be one week or two weeks, or an entire month. But it's really hard to diagnose, so I'm not suprised your doc visit left you feeling a little at a loss. Everyone I know who's had it, it's gone away within two weeks. If it doesn't go away by then, it won't hurt to go back to the doc I suppose.
I feel sort've like that from time to time. Not as severe as what you're describing, though.
Edited for fewer details.
