You BASTARD.
I've been wanting to see Before the Devil for a while now. I guess now's as good a time as any.
It was longer, but rumpy edited the double feature part out :P
It was bugging me. I stuick it in the description
I've really got to check out Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. Lumet is one of my favorite directors based on Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico and Prince of the City. Fuck, I've said it before - Prince of the City is the best cop drama I've ever seen.
I have a copy of "Devil" waiting to be watched... now I know not to watch it on a day when I am feeling blue. "Kidnapped" is being added to my Netflix, thanks TNL Movie Club.
I recieved these in the mail yesterday, can't wait to watch them.
PS, I want that kidnapped cover as a poster, its too fucking awesome.
I just watched Before the Devil Knows your Dead.
What a fucking great movie. From the cast alone I knew i was gonna see something worthwhile, but i wasn't expecting something this great. The direction was subtle yet really solid, the movie looks great. You could grab a screen cap of pretty much any moment in the movie and it would look good enough to go on the back of the dvd cover. The story was uncompromisingly dark, and really came to life due to the superb acting.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman was just fucking incredible, some of his finest work.I didn't expect to sympathize with Andy as much as you do, especially considering how cold all of his actions are throughout the movie. He should play darker characters more often. The entire cast was just fucking great though.
I only have one gripe with this movie, and its a small one at that. The music was really obvious at times, particularly towards the beginning, which kinda took me out of the movie at some pretty pivotal scenes, such as where the heist goes wrong and we see Hank panicking as he flees the scene.
I have Kidnapped here waiting to be watched but alas, its late, so i must leave it for another day. Thanks for picking such awesome movies DNG!
I just watched Rabid Dogs and it was a damn good movie, the twist at the end really made it.
Looking at Bavas' body of work he made some serious waves in cinema and until relativley recently he had been all but forgotten. His last works hit the ground like a lead balloon and 2 days after he died, Alfred Hitchcock ate it too, completely shoving Bava into the shadows.
The whole tale behind the movie is really facinating, 20 years later the movie actually comes out, you don't see that happening much. The restored version looks really sharp to boot, a lot of care went into it even if they added some unneeded bits to make "Kidnapped".
Great pick D_N_G.
Argh, if only i went back to this thread earlier today. I just watched kidnapped, and the new score stands out like crazy. I just read that it had footage that was not in Rabid Dogs so i assumed it was the way to go. Oh well, now i know for next time.
This aside, its a really good film. The twist was fucking awesome and completely caught me off guard despite the fact i was expecting one, and now i want to watch it again to see if i missed anything that alluded to it (despite the obvious bits). My favorite bits were Blades reaction to Doc shooting 32, and the most intense urination I've ever witnessed in my life. Also, LOL @ The stupid bitch at the gas station. That was some nice dark humor thrown in to break up this harsh and nihilistic film.
I was really surprised at how modern it all felt, as well as the general quality overall. The acting varied from shaky to great, and the dialog was for the most part really good. I really enjoyed the characters, i thought it was really clever how it slowly humanized everyone just to make the last 5 minutes or so particularly biting. It was shot really confidently without the intense visual flare that you often see in older Italian films, which is especially surprising from a giallo director. This reservedness really helped the stories immersion.
overall, I'm really glad you picked it DNG.
