Yeah, the ATB bar was a bit too slow for my tastes, and stealing multiple items from bosses is a HUGE, HUGE pain in the ass. Whenever I got to a boss w/o Zidane in the introductory part of the game, before you can switch around, I would cheer.
What really makes this game great is the character design... and what exactly is wrong with being Disney-esque? A little Disney once in a while never hurt anyone; not every game has to be blood and guts and drama.
Anyway, FF9 is great. Where's the hate for this game? I haven't noticed all that much...
