I think you actually have to draw that out.
After spending some time with it after finishing it, here's what I know for sure:
- I still like Wind Waker just a little more than this. Exploration in it feels more adventurous, and there's lots of what-ifs about what to find under the oceans, finding islands that aren't important, but are interesting. Skyward's overworld is really sparse and takes away from that feeling. There's also a lot of other things that make Wind Waker really remarkable from Skyward.
- It's close to my favorite Zelda though - among the top 3 easy. More for the promise it holds for the series than in its overall execution.
- I like that they're finally adding elements back into the series that at one time mattered. Combat, inventory management, shield durability, stamina...these things remind me of Zelda 1, 2, and Link to the Past in some ways. All good ways.
- I like that it's willing to pull away from the patterns that have been mainstays since Ocarina. I like that the world areas add in different elements, enemies, etc. and feel different when you revisit them. I like that dungeons are shorter, but there's more of them. I like that there's no Water Temple, Fire Temple, Wood Temple, etc. Or how bosses aren't limited to just being inside temples. Or that they aren't just a matter of using an item found in that area against them to win.
- I really enjoy the sword combat. I think Red Steel 2 does a better job with Motion Plus (swing strength matters as much as direction), but it works at what it needs to - being fast and easy to understand, while offering enough variety to keep a battle interesting. I never had the sensor go wonky on me, so it never felt like Link wasn't doing what I was.
- The art style is nice. The music is nice. The character, world, and prop/item designs are nice. I think Wind Waker's look is very timeless - it'll keep looking good even as 3D gets better looking - but Skyward Sword looks pretty remarkable.
Not to say it's all good though:
- It could've done without the last third of the game, easily. By then it feels like the Modern Zelda trap of "we're breaking this simple goal up into lots of fetch/chores just so you can feel busy" which is a disappointment.
- The last fight. I know what they were trying to go for, but it's kinda unremarkable, compared to the way all the other bosses are presented.
- Post-game blues: I really had no issue with chasing bugs or finding items. All that felt like stuff that I just would compulsively do as I was going through the game. Once done though? It doesn't feel nearly as fun to go seek it out for its own sake. Same with earning money - I know the wallet can get ridiculously large, but it's not like there's ever been a reason to earn that much. Having 2,000 at any time is usually more than enough for the high price items.
- Combat's a double edged sword (hur). It's fun to do when you're doing it, but a lot of combat is short, especially later on when Link's sword tears through common grunts. While I appreciate the feeling of getting better/stronger in the game, it also means some stuff becomes less of a challenge.
- All the rest: A lot of the common complaints - feelings of content padding, Fi's nagging, everyone always trying to tell you *exactly* what to do next, the dialog that shows anytime you get an item for the first time in that sitting...it's not as bothersome to me, because I think "well, those are the quirks of a post-Ocarina Zelda." Then again, I shouldn't have to acquiesce to bad design just because they've been at it for that way for about a decade.
I know Nintendo was bragging how it was the longest Zelda yet. Honestly, it would be an even better game if they went ahead and yanked out some of the uneeded content. Maybe make the boss rush mode a menu, than some NPC trigger you had to hunt down. Perhaps more variety in the upgrading (since it's a really nice thing to have, even better since it's not required), in the shields and medals, etc...more content without the unnecessary length.
Maybe for the next one...
It wasn't the longest Zelda at all. I spent 60 hours on Twilight with mid-level ocd, but Skyward was at 58 when i was constantly trying to trigger something new and find out why that stupid butt wouldn't get stronger from all those pushups.
I also found out why i hate this game:
Fujibayashi
This man directed The Oracles games , Four Swords, Minish Cap, AND Skyward Sword, all of the Zeldas at the bottom of my list. I originally thought i just hated Flagship games, but nope. Fujibayashi is the force behind boring Zelda games. I hope he is never involved with Zelda again. I hate him.
Aonuma is behind all my favorite Zelda games. I hope they let him do whatever he wants, Zelda or not, because i'll probably like it a lot.
It's weird to look at a Zelda and think "Eh...". Even the part of me that wants to care doesn't care. Call me when they make Link's Awakening II and I'm there, but other than that I think I'm done with this series entirely.
James
I dunno... as much as i hate it, i keep thinking about the game. Maybe if i play it again i would get through the parts i hated more quickly and i'd actually like it. But i doooooon't wanna have to fight Girahim again. i hated those fights the most.
Speaking of Fujibayashi, I heard he's been hired on at Capcom. He's supposed to helm the Legendary Third Iteration of a Mega Brand.
I, for one, can't wait.
NO. He used to work for Capcom, then Intendo thought that Minish Cap wasn't shitty for some reason, and they adopted him. He will NEVER work on Legendary Mega-Tri Man.
Finished this one, but it felt like a homework assignment. Worst over-world in a videogame. Motion "controls" lack any form of control whatsoever. Flying your bird was about as easy as trying to aim your pee at the toilet in pitch black with the seat up. The white-haired villain was so creepily effeminate that the homophobia that took me years to work through returned in an instant. Ocarina, Majora's, Wind Waker = some of my favorite games. Twilight was pretty terrible, but OK in comparison to this slab of horseshit. Skyward Sword sucks. SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS
