It's nice to see World of Goo getting some love in this thread. Everyone should play it.
I should preface this by stating that I played very, very few games this year. I've grown increasingly disenchanted with this generation of gaming and Metal Gear Solid 4's terribleness more or less killed my hope for gaming. Still, there were some small successes, though nothing on the scale of last year's Mario Galaxy and Portal.
- Mirror's Edge - Solid blend of refreshing gameplay mechanics and good level design. I'm only halfway through (sooo long) but I hope it gets more challenging--the game does coddle you with simplistic challenges for way too long.
- Patapon - Very cool little game with gobs of originality and unfortunately plagued with a need for grinding. Not as good as LocoRoco, but it helped make my PSP my most played system this year.
- Wipeout Pulse - It's more or less just Pure but with a much more compelling career mode. I find it difficult to come back to this game after putting it down for a while, so I haven't played it as much as I'd like. I was almost intensely excited for Wipeout HD until I realized I already had Pulse and hadn't come close to completing it.
- Space Invaders Extreme - I can't even remember if I bought this in '07 or '08, but I've got the Japanese release with the paddle attachment. The game is really pretty cool with the paddle. It's like Rez meets Geometry Wars, though not really as good as either of those games.
- Super Street Fighter II Turbo: HD Remix - I suppose I have to put this on the list because it's really the best game released this year, but that's because it's largely the same game released over a decade ago so I can't give it too much credit. Though props for working online in a 2D fighter--still a sad, sad substitute for playing with people standing/sitting next to you, but no one seems to want to play games with actual people anymore.
- Devil May Cry 4 - The parts where you play as Dante are good.
10 game is way too many.
The only "top" games I played this year were:
NHL '09 - I think I have something like 175 games played in the 6 vs. 6 mode. It's pretty much the best thing to ever happen to sports games.
Rock Band 2 - Better instruments. Better songs. Better calibration system. DLC is hitting its stride. Hyperspeed is back. World Tour is now online. Finally can "make a set list."
Honorable mention:
Street Fighter Super Jigga Boom Remix - All the updates are great and the online play comes with excellent netcode.
Everything else has too many flaws to be put on the same level.
If DMC 4 made the #6 spot on your 2008 list and the reasons being referred to are the Dante sections (while the level design was tailored to Nero), then I can understand why 2008 was so disappointing to you.Quote:
