I never liked Circuit City.
I never had a positive customer service experience there. EVER. I might get ignored at other stores, but I was AVOIDED at Circuit City.
I'd like to think this is karma paying back for Divx.
I picked up some good stuff for cheap at CC throughout the years. That was offset by the ghetto feel of the stores, and their refusal to arrange their games or movies in any kind of logical order.
I just picked up a wireless guitar hero guitar for $20 there. They had the best deals on them and have a whole aisle devoted to Rockband and Guitar Hero that was pretty sweet. I've had a ton of bad CC experiences in the past, but I agree with D_N_G that they have really improved. Their holiday deals were better than anyone, particularly a couple TVs I looked at. The stores that were built or remodeled in the last couple years are all really nice too.
I've always had a harder time getting someone to acknowledge my presence at Best Buy. Over a decade ago, I went to Best Buy to get a TV, home theater, and a DVD player. This was when there was literally three dvd players to chose from at the stores, and maybe 20 DVDs. Anyhow, I stood at Bestbuy looking at all this shit for about 30 minutes. Employess walked past me every couple minutes, no one would give me the time of day. So I left and went to the CC across the street. Ten minutes later, I was $3000 lighter in the pocket, but got everything I wanted (DVD player was $800 by itself). That was the beginning of my 5 year Best Buy Boycott, which ended when almost the direct opposite happened between the two stores.
Just to repeat what was already said, make sure you use any Circuit City gift cards you have before they go into liquidation, because at that point they're worthless. Make sure to tell anybody you know who may have a gift card to do the same.
Honestly, there probably won't be a lot of good deals out of the store closings. The company CC uses for liquidation supposedly marks things UP before the sale starts, that way stupid people think they're getting an awesome deal on something 50% off when they really aren't. That's been my experience - one CC just closed out here recently, and about the only thing I found worth buying was an 8GB Memory Stick Pro Duo for $36. (Which, looking at buy.com, they're about that price now on there.) You can find a couple decent deals in the final days, but at that point they're pretty picked over.
Personally, I've never really been big on Circuit City, except for those times when they had some decent clearance sales on games. So, I'm not really sad to see them go, but at the same time, I never like when a store goes under, especially at this point when we already have enough people losing their jobs.
Edit: Somebody over at Cheap Ass Gamer, who works at CC, is saying that gift cards absolutely will be valid during liquidation. However, my personal opinion is that I wouldn't take the chance if I had one.
My local CC has a pimp-ass Rock Band bass guitar controller. Real wood neck, same weight as a real bass, same size as a real bass, and the strum bar is split in two so you can pluck with two fingers like a real bass.
No way I'd drop the money on it, but at closeout prices...
Still sucks tho'
