Yep, the US version is harder than the Japanese version - for some odd reason, it doesn't feature the energy meter the Japanese version does. It'd be nice to take multiple hits without dying in the US version, but sadly, you can't.

Life bar or not, I wish I have a Genesis.
I'm with Regus here. Life bars and Conta Don't mix. The reason the Jap version has them is because they don't like their games hard. I would rather not even play a Contra game if it had a life bar. Hey Johnny U, How come you don't have a Genny?
Found out that a roomie has a Nomad and A/V hookups. Mayhaps be using that instead of my CDX once he gets home, it'll look better then RF at the very least...
I'm not sure how the game would be with lifebars. The single-hit-die just feels more Contra, since the first two were like that. And the game would probably be easier, which I wouldn't like since it's been a long time since I've played a good 2D game that has forced me to learn it and learn it well, and I'm liking it.
Life bar = 3 hit , 3 hit = 3life in us version.
I think it would be difficult to finish the game with just one credit.
A single credit, or without dying once?Quote:

The game is tough, but it can be beaten on a single credit.
Having it set to one hit kills forces you to hone your skills, offering a much greater challenge and sense of accomplishment.
Oh, and an for those who may not know:

The Japanese Contra: Hard Corps is superior to the American version for one main reason...you can take more than one hit (a life meter is kept next to your character's portrait.) Yes, each character can take three hits before dying, making this near impossible game much easier. WHY this was removed from all other versions is beyond me, because the only real thing that stops Contra: Hard Corps from being the best Contra title is the insane difficulty.
Unbelieveably lame.Quote:
In Europe, Contra is known as Probotector. The only main difference is that your commandos and many of the enemies have been changed into robots. It seems countries like Germany were concerned about people killing other people. So Konami had to change the game a little bit in order to make it kosher for release, and this same cart was distributed all over Europe.....

Even more was changed for Hard Corps for European release, and is simply known as Probotector. All of the characters are robots of course, the only character not being changed was Browny. Curiously, the human instructor has also changed into a robot. All of the characters were also given unimaginative names like CX-1, CX-2, CX-3 and CX-4. Oddly enough, the plot has also changed...the dialogue has been rewritten (all of the "curse" words like damn are gone) plus Colonel Bahamut has been completely removed from the game! Instead, the group must defeat some underground alien rebels on a remote island. And instead of the Alien Cell that has been stolen, it's a powerful device known as the X-Drive. I have no idea why all references to Contra 3 were removed...but they were. There's also a language select to change between English, French and German.
Well, I always wanted one when I was a young lad. Never got one and too lazy to track one down today.Quote:

It was hard at first, but if you like it as much as I did, you'll soon have played it enough times to beat any path on one credit (or with dying).
It's one of those JP to US changes I'm glad was implemented.
HC isn't too hard by any means. It's a Contra game, damnit! It's not supposed to be easy! I don't remember being frustrated with it or anything... the bosses, for the most part, have some pretty easy and dependable patterns to exploit. And who could forget the weird alternate ending?
