I don't mean to give the standard defensive nerd response to this sort of thing, but I do believe that [Rec] was made before Cloverfield.
So was Diary of the Dead. Cloverfield really stole the thunder from a lot of people. Which shows what marketing and budget will do for you.
But yes, you're right, pretty much.
