The one issue I have with this game is the writing. I was pretty excited about Patrick Stewart's narration, but that doesn't matter when what he's reading is the most trite, cliche-ridden poop. I imagine him smirking critically as he recites it.
I wasn't expecting Shakespeare, but goddamn--let's have something beyond an untalented angst-ridden 17-year-old's rendering of a gothic universe. (This is all taken from the demo, btw--hoping it gets better. . . )
I take it you've already downloaded it? Or is that the demo impressions?
Demo.
I played through the demo and am keeping my preorder. I can't recall a game where the reviews have been so unhelpful. It's back to the complete lack of background most reviewers have. They mention "long-time Castlevania fans" and then compare it to SotN. That invalidates everything else they say. The IGN review talks about how it has so many less items than "typical" Castlevania games. I've seen the knives already. All we need are axes and holy water or something similar, and his statement is bullshit. Those God damned Metroidvanias need to DIAF before no one remembers what the series is really about.
I think that is what the series is about now. The Metroidvanias either outnumber or equal the "OG" games at this point.
There are still more real Castlevanias than Metroidvanias, though pseudo remakes muddy the water a little bit. And we won't get into the Japanese 3D stuff.
Give it a year then get back to me on that figure. Let's talk US-only releases, I think the original series has been edged out.
There is no such thing as a Japanese-only Castlevania anymore, except arguably the MSX version if you count that as unique. The X68000 and PC Engine ones have now been released here.
edit: What the hell, I'll try to name them from memory. Hopefully I don't fuck this up by forgetting something.
Akumajo Dracula (X68000)*
Vampire Killer (MSX)*
Castlevania*
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
Super Castlevania IV*
Haunted Castle
Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo**
Castlevania: Dracula X**
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Castlevania: The Adventure***
Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge
Castlevania Legends
Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth***
And then you have the odd Harmony of Despair, which is somewhere in the middle.
You could argue that the *, **, and *** games are remakes or ports, but it doesn't change the fact that the new shit isn't close yet with seven.
edit: I almost forgot Bloodlines... yikes.
What's the deal with that demo? I have a UK PSN Account, but it's not Plus. Can I go grab it?
