It's not really the level design (which is neither great nor terrible), it's completely the broken physics, which break any sense of flow the levels have and keep me from going fast when I want to go fast and make Sonic feel like he has lead shoes on.
The old Sonic games weren't all about speed all the time, it's true. Especially Sonic 1, which had some very slow levels like Marble Gardens and Labyrinth Zone. But if I can't have that fun of rolling down a hill, then why is this even Sonic? No, those games at least controlled well (but had generally variously shitty level design). This game is not fit to lick Sonic Rush or Rush Adventure's shit, and those games weren't exactly perfect.
Nailing the control is really an essential part of Sonic. If you can't get that right, nothing, NOTHING you do will make it a good game.
I think Frog needs a time out.
Also, I remember going down hills like Frog was talking about, hitting down to go into a roll and speeding up, if not staying the same speed. In S4 if you do that you slow down.
I should point out that I do enjoy most of the GG/Master System Sonics as well, and they have pretty busted physics as well. Maybe I'm just easy to please.
I've played all of those games. The Sonic 4 physics are far worse.
I tried the demo and the controls completely ruin it. It feels so awkward and unfinished! There is no sense of momentum at all, stalling in mid air for no reason makes no sense. Why the hell does he accelerate so slow? And $15? No way.
Agree 100%. ANY platformer needs great physics to compel a player to haul through the stages. Great level design will never be appreciated if the character controls terrible.
Which is why I wouldn't go for Sonic 4 for more than say...$5. I'm curious to play it out but those controls are too sloppy to make it a 'must buy at any price' platformer.
