I'm not getting upset at it. I'm just positing that doing it unjokingly and often isn't the endearing character trait you may seem to think.

unless...he doesn't want to be endearing?
Anywho, back on the SMB tip - SMB1 and 3 are pretty damn similar. It has the same level progressions, the same "hit bricks to break em, ? ones to get stuff," the same scheme that powerups alter the way Mario behaves...just more of it. More powerups, more levels, more "themes" to the worlds, more enemies...but the nuts-and-bolts groundwork is pretty much the same thing.
With LBP, I don't think there's an added value that some solutions require multiplayer. Again, it's designing a game so that "this is what you do for single" and "this is what you do in multi." Sure some games do it well, others make completely different experiences out of them. Though it's still compartmentalizing the two. There's some credit due for a game that is designed so its all an enjoyable experience, multi or no
(and after watching some of those "Super Skill" vids, I'm very much sure that coordinated, high skill multi is not only possible in NSMBWii, but is just another element that could or could not be pursued by players. It's just up to them and their imaginations).
For the sake of discussion, I'll agree, but consider what would happen if all we got were more SMB3 games. SMW was a good shift that kept the core intact, but made it feel new and interesting. Same with SM64. I can tolerate sequels that improve on a concept, but there comes a point where the series either needs to end or come up with something new. GTA, Metroid, Mario...most franchises that have been around for an extended period have seen it at least once. But the last Golden Sun was like 6 years ago? And all you can do is give us a carbon copy?
Ironically, I just read this article on IGN, for what it's worth.
First, I'm not playing Hardcorer than thou--You are--'sides most hardcore gamers are assholes who think they're above it all, so fuck them. I don't care about whether something is new or has some novelty mechanic that makes it totally original. NSMB (on the DS) is a perfect example of a formula that's worked for years, minor changes in mechanics do enough to keep a game feeling fresh, while keeping it familiar, makes for something that is easily approachable.
The DS and the Wii are the most easily approachable systems in the history of gaming. That's why they're both such successful properties for Nintendo. But just because grandma and lil' sis' all of a sudden want a Wii, Nintendo's harcore gamer street cred. is somehow diminished. But if you took a second to actually look at the play mechanics these two work off of, you'd see the "new" you crave so much. Touch screens and motion controls alone make them both funtastically awesome to play. Do many games use it right? Fuck no, but it's worth wading through all of that to get to the rare games like The World Ends With You, or Mario Galaxy that do EVERYTHING right.
Drawn to Life and Scribblenauts are also excellent examples of games that do something new and interesting, and anyone who dislikes either of those can choke on a rusty aids needle.
Actually, the American Mario 2 was a completely different game that they pallet swapped with Mario, Luigi, and the rest, and thus, is the least most original game ever, in the history of ever, ever.
...except for multiplayer.Quote:
NSMB doesn't offer anything that I haven't seen done better in games made 20 years ago
The fact that they gave it the exact same name as the one on the DS doesn't clue you in to their conscious effort to make the same game, but differently for the Wii?Quote:
...or for that fact, different from the DS game (yes I played it).
Again, assholes. I'm not directing it at you, but assholes, nearly all of them.Quote:
My opinion on Golden Sun is that Nintendo has made it a point to develop for the casual gamer...
Then look harder, because it's not difficult to find a good "NEW SHINY NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" game on either system, or, you could just pull the stick out of your, admittedly firm, ass, and just try playing games to have fun. Like you used to, before you became such a jaded prick. Just saying is all.Quote:
and until I see something that proves otherwise, I'm not buying it.
I hope so, it adds to the cohesiveness of the story if you can look at it and know it happened in the same world, just by the aesthetics alone. I'm willing to put money on Camelot choosing to retain the original look so it feels more like you're going back to visit an old friend while making new memories, and putting all their effort into solid story telling and enhanced mechanics with just a sprinkling of the "new" to keep the experience both comforting and fresh.Quote:
It looks exactly like the other Golden Sun games.
Could you imagine if Peter Jackson thought as shallowly as you, by the third LotR, they'd have been fighting in space with Nerf bats along side less contemporary fantasy creatures, like Popples and Wuzzles. Y'know, to keep it fresh.Galaxy 2, if Nintendo is to be believed, is mostly, comprised of unfinished or unused levels from the first, basically it's a new movie they made from stuff that woulda been in the Director's Cut, but with added content. Nothing wrong with that at all, that's how we got Zone of the Enders, and I love that game. So long as they remember to leave out all that crap about planet Zeist, I'm game.Quote:
I'm not saying reinvent the genre with every release, but ffs, don't just tack a 2 on the end or whatever and expect people to buy it (see Galaxy 2).
I read the thread.

I don't get it. Golden Sun is JRPG and people are talking about innovation? I mean, I like an RPG every other year or so, but I'm not fooling myself into thinking the gameplay is going to be some kind of revelation. Barring the occasional oddball like Knights in the Knightmare it's a stagnant genre, which isn't the same thing as saying it's not fun.

I loved Golden Sun. Like, LOVED.
I'll play this.
Thank you. I can't believe I'm the one who has to try being reasonable, or making sense of things, I'M being REASONABLE. I should be trolling and making underage girlfriend jokes, fuck.
BTW how was KitK? Seriously, it looked decent, but I didn't get much play in the demo.
Technically brilliant, but I couldn't get into it. It deserves a look, and even if you don't like it you can't help but be impressed by how much thought was put into its systems and gameplay. I really wish I'd been able to enjoy it.
James
I tried several times to play the first one, and it just didn't click with me.
