So, I'm wanting to get one of these three, but I'm kinda meh on all three of them. None of the three have anything I'm absolutely amazed with, yet they all have something that piques my interest. I've weighed the pros and cons as they pertain to me, and here's what I see:
360:
+ Live has a wealth of great stuff.
+ For the most part, ports seem to be better or at least equal to their PS3 counterparts
+ Wide selection
+ Inexpensive
+ VO:OT, Rez, Ikaruga, Metal Slug 3, and Shadow Complex... for about the same price as a full disc game.
- Very faulty hardware
- Few (if any) exclusives are of my taste
- Regional lockout
- Not much of a multiplayer guy, so Live account is basically for DLC.
PS3:
+ A couple of exclusives I REALLY wanna try out (3D Dot Game Heroes being first and foremost)
+ PSN isn't pay-for (yet) like Live is.
+ More reliable hardware, and backwards compatability is more firm.
+ Region-free
- DLC (new content and classic) pretty much is terrible on this side of the Pacific.
- Finding a hardware-based Backwards compatable PS3 is more of a pain than I want it to be
- Most of the import stuff that I'm interested in is either on Fchanistan PSN or Fchanistan 360 (shmups, PSOne stuff), thereby severely lessening the appeal of regional lockout.
- Still the most expensive option; Slims have NO BC (which I consider a requirement), and hardware BC PS3s are either going to be used or inconvenient to track down (price, used-ness, etc.)
- Not as bad as 360s, but YLoD worries me; Sony's consoles have a tendency to die.
Wii:
+ Virtual Console is right up my alley.
+ Stuff like Konami's Rebirth games, as well as Military Madness and Cave Story sound very, very appealing.
+ Inexpensive and durable.
+ Easily hackable.
+ Nintendo first party games are sure fire, and it seems to be a home to niche titles.
+ Metroid and Rondo.
- While I'm more than happy to pay for ROMs, VC seems a bit overpriced.
- 3rd Party support is absolutely terrible. Niche is right, VERY little 3rd party games strike my interest.
- While not much of an online play kinda guy, I WOULD like the option for it; Wii seems to be the odd man out on this one.
- Ultimately will have to shell out for Classic controller, or at least a GCN pad.
- Ultimate reason I want this is for VC, and if that's the case, I'm better off upgrading my PC, getting a USB game pad, and if I REALLY wanna be Yoshi and shell out money for ROMs/"Say no to piracy", then I could just do some sort of GameTap kinda thing or something and be done with it... otherwise, a PC supports GC emulation as well as pretty much all 16 Bit and most 32 Bit stuff (for free, if I choose to be unscrupulous), and I already have it sitting in my room.
I'm sure the John Gabriel G.I.F.T. responses will roll forth, but somewhere there should be some nuggets of wisdom and truth... what do you say, TNL?
