Just bought Gran Turismo 3.

I got the GH version for a cool $20. I popped it in and decided to play the arcade mode. First off, let me say that these are by far the best graphics I've seen on the PS2. Why the hell don't other games (yes Le Mans, I'm talking to you) look like this?

I started playing and my car skidded all over the place like I were driving on ice. What the hell? The game plays horribly. I tried race and drift and they were bascially the same thing.

Do I have to get like 400 licenses and play 30 tracks to get a car that controls decent? I'm not sure I want to do that. It would suck if I had to. Why have an arcade mode if you need to go through the simulation mode first? I want a quick race fix dammit! I looked in the options mode but there was nothing to adjust any of the starting cars.

Stuff you do in simulation mode doesn't affect your car's performance in arcade mode. That's just how the game controls. So there's no need for special licenses and such to fully enjoy the arcade mode.

I felt the same way as you when I first got that game. Looks like a million bucks but controls like shit. You will get used to the controls eventually. And when you do eventually get used to them, you will either love the game for the way it is, or hate it.

try arcade mode first...you must drive slowly and carefully past corners...kinda like using the cornering technique (as opposed to power sliding) in a Ridge Racer game. And yes, I still think these graphics are some of the best I've seen, EVAR. I mean the quality of them is just absolutely UNREAL...and I'm not talking about just the cars, but the levels. I don't know what the rest of your TVs are calibrated to look like, but on my pro set they've virtually unrivaled...and it took me by surprise since I heard no one rave THAT high about them. I mean half the time I race I'm just driving along gawking at the visuals and watching them from different angles in replay. :P I still think aside from the trees/grass/shrubs of Rallisport, no other racing game has anything on GT3's visuals. I just wish it played like Ridge Racer... ::sigh::

Rallisport takes GT3 out back and spanks it red, but those car models are excellent.

Yeah, this game really deserves all the praise it gets (Well, other than this board ;)). Excellent, excellent physics and phenominal graphics, sound, and replay. I agree, this game still looks undoubtedly better than anything on PS2 currently or in the works. I don't know how they did it, but this thing just blows everything else out of the water. Rallisport though beats it by a bit in my book, but considering how much more powerful the Xbox is, it's just insane that GT3 still holds up so great.

GT: Most overrated non-Square series evar.

Seriously though, I was playing this yesterday, and it's a great game. If arcade mode is your thing, and you want increased difficulty, then highlight Hard Mode and press L1 and R1 at the same time to get Professional Mode. It really depends on what Class you race: S class is nuts, but sometimes too damn fast. The Viper is just too sweet, though.
