I'm six hours in and really loving this. It's driven by a WRPG-like quest structure that far more JRPGs need to employ (if only as an ancillary system).
The writing has some pep to it and Estelle is a fiery lil' tomater.
The font is every bit as awful as screenshots suggest, and the game's filled to the brim with missables. Aside from those niggles, it's all roses. This could end up being the PSP's best JRPG (although maybe that's not saying much). Supposed to be massive, too.
Crimson Gem Saga was a fine game. Not perfect or stellar, but fun and enjoyable. The battles took usually two rounds and to get over the MP stinginess, which did hamper the game, you just hadda do all the dungeons including the two towers. Voice acting was shit, but not worse than the second and third Xenosagas.
Nah, it sucks.
Nine hours and finally made it out of the prologue! I don't know if the rest of the game follows suit, but in the first town at least, all the usual throwaway NPCs have their own mini-stories that develop as you progress the main quest. You're free to completely ignore them of course, but if you're thorough, you'll speak to them between every major story event, and they'll always have something new to say. It's a nice touch.
For instance, at one point a guy is proposing to his girlfriend in an alley behind a store. But she's reluctant to accept because the scenery isn't exactly romantic. Then, a little later, if you climb to the top of this clock tower, there they are! The guy had found a more suiting place for such an important moment and she was happy and said "yes." But if you hadn't climbed that tower during that very brief window you never would have seen the two of them up there.
This game's rad.
I will be thinking about buying this since I finished CS, that sounds great.
I picked this up, and I concur with Compass! There's a lot of effort put into the NPCs in the very beginning at least, and I can see why the Sequel would be such a massive game!
It feels like every character in this game is going to be important later on (even though I'm sure they won't all be) or may be important in the sequel! I totally expect that little news reporter girl to be a major part later in the game!
It's kinda cool that all the characters actually have some form of personality.
I caved and bought it because they said they're currently translating the second one in their spare time as they do not have the man power to keep working on the second game as well as translate games that will a) actually sell and b) don't take a massive amount of time to localize. I want to support that!
Where are the t.i.t.s.?
All I see is little girls.
So I've put about 25 hours into this game, and am up to Chapter III of IV or V I suspect. If I wasn't talking to everyone it'd be much faster no doubt! I enjoy that all the characters have their own little storyline, and there are a lot of neat side characters! The fact this game is part of a trilogy really helps it out as well. Because there's a lot of characters that I suspect you'll see in the later games as they've grown, and for the ones that have actually left an impression on you, the two that got married in the prologue going on their pilgramage, the little reporter girl, etc etc, will be really cool!
It still falls into some RPG ruts, in the humor department (though it's got some good humor! just sometimes it's relatively predictable) a lot of the characters are still kind of predictable from the get go. There's only a few characters I'm not entirely sure of. The main character Estelle can be a little irritating because she falls into many of the cliche shortcomings of a hot headed but passionate for justice type character. However, the more experienced characters see through a lot of the cliche's, and often I'll find a character saying what I've been thinking. "Oh this guy is obviously a spy" and then later you'll figure out, a character knew it the whole time. So it's enjoyable on that front!
The combat is pretty solid! battles against random enemies can be easily avoided when you want, and the actual pacing of leveling up, getting septith to create the orbs which give you stats etc is pretty polished. I'm never TOO far ahead, but I'm also never behind (at all).
The magic system is kinda cool, you get orbamenets which have specific things (10% to blind an enemy, +HP, +STR - DEF, etc etc) and values. To get certain spells you just need to have certain values, IE if you have 2 water element ones with a value of 3, you have access to any skill that just requires water levels of 6 or under. So switching around the orbs for stats, and for useful magic lets you mix things up when you need them.
I actually kinda like the prerendered models, as far as prerendered models go they're not too bad! (It's only really bad when you just their finishing moves).
Overall so far, this game is really good, and it will be a huge shame if we don't see all three games brought to America. If you're looking for a good JRPG to sink portable time into, especially on your unloved PSP, I would highly recommend picking this game up.

PC gets Trails FC this winter on Steam. And? Yes, it's true. SC is coming to PC (Steam) and PSP/Vita (PSN digital exclusive) sometime in 2014. Can't really say this surprises me, but I'm getting psyched. On SC, they'll be partnering with Carpe Fulgur for the translation.
Seriously lovin' this news.Quote:
