What I don't like about many of the arguments presented by the protesters is the same things I don't like about every other thing. It's not my precise views. That doesn't mean I don't support and empathize with some of their goals. It's easy to say they're just a bunch of people looking for a handout, but that sells the whole thing short. The real message as far as I can tell is that "Wall Street" - read: the heart of corporate america - got the largest handout in history for tragically irresponsible behavior. They're calling it out as bullshit. If anything someone as libertarian leaning as Squall should be all about the 'soul' of this protest - if against a majority of the involved.

I understand why the protests are occurring. We're in some difficult times right now and I do agree with some of the general aims of the protests. What turns me off about it is hearing people quote the Bolshevik Revolution and a lot of people being involved just because they're pissed that people have more money than them. I'm sure there are a lot of reasonable people involved but from what I've read (and I'm not going to pretend to be very educated on the protests outside of what I've seen on Yahoo! News) there's a lot of communist ideals behind the motivation. History is not on the side of anybody leaning in this direction. Too much government regulation of the economy will always lead to a totalitarian culture because ultimately, people don't want to live like that.

Again, I'm not so educated in these protests outside of some AP and Yahoo articles. If I'm misguided, well, I'm misguided.

The unemployment rate will continue to be a problem in this country and other countries unless we start more industry where man-power is required. I believe that a lot of companies that laid off masses of workers have found that they can operate at a high level without so much man-power and that is why unemployment has been pretty standard (even after the recession technically ended). This is partially a consequence of technology.

I think we have a massively over-educated society. Not everyone needs to go to college. People are going to art school just to go and then insisting on working in that field as if the job is owed to them. Same thing holds true to the guy getting a BA in business.

What's funny, is this Do Some Real Work mentality is usually held by over-educated people with cushy office jobs.

I'm on the tail end of 6 consecutive years back in the restaurant industry. 6 years ago I walked into a PF Changs and got a job working the pantry position (the bottom) because I needed to get some work - any work - and I wasn't too proud to start there again. In my time off I practiced the kind of food I wanted to make on my own. A lot of that food was really shitty, but that's how you learn. Now I'm opening my own place next month. Granted, I'm opening it with dead grandma money, but the sentiment is the same. Real work - the kind that gives you scars - can reward you more than you may think.

Are you saying that spending the brightest, most energetic years of your life doing busy work to get a piece of paper isn't always a good idea?

That's good and all, but you need a degree to get a job in my field, say.

I think that if you're not willing to get a degree in a science or engineering field, then you should think twice about going.

A bachelor's degree in science is about as useful as a BFA.
You need to get a master's degree or a doctorate to really do anything other than teach English abroad.
