To be fair, nothing will ever beat mom's cooking, ever. My mom makes the best biscuits and gravy in the world in an area where everyone knows how to make good biscuits and gravy.

Same here. All I had growing up was the blandest, unseasoned Pennsylvania Dutch styled shit. I blame my dads terrible taste.

Yes.
I grew up eating a lot of potatoes and meatloaf kind of shit. I don't like potatoes much anymore. But I do like boxty a bunch and some of the fancier shit made with potatoes my parents make. We also bake potato bread with potato chips baked in to the crust that's pretty awesome.
Toronto has a lot of good food. I've just been let down by the quality of Mexican places there on the whole. The last one I went to had good empinadas but that was it. Nothing tasted like it had any kind of time behind the cooking (which IMO makes great Mexican food). The restaurants east of the city are great. Superb mole and pozolé.
Never would have thought of Durham as a hotbed for authentic Mexican food.
