Namco has just released this video of the cancelled Star Blade 2. Too bad it was dropped, because this looks like it would have turned out to be amazing if it were finished. This was made for the O.R.B.S. (Over Reality Booster System) environmental cabinet, which had a spherical screen.
I'm guessing the game hardware for this was System 246 (PS2).
I really like how they took the flat shaded polygonal style of the original (which obviously emerged from technical limitation) and turned it into a distinctive style. Almost Rez-like in a way.
I would have enjoyed playing this in a fancy arcade cabinet. The original with its weird pseudo-3D screen was always a favorite.
Part 1 is playable on Tekken 5 (PS2) for some reason.
I've always wanted to see a new game done in an untextured polygon style, with fancy lighting and other effects picking up the slack. Turns out it would have looked great.

I really miss untextured polygons. There's just something appealing about real geometric detail that painted on textures can't fully replace.
I'd love to see what a game like Virtua Racing or Silpheed would look like at 1080p resolution with tens of millions of polygons and proper antialiasing.

There are times when flat-shading really works. Viewpoint in HD (the sprites have sort of a Silpheed look) sounds nice now. Instead of a makeover ala the PS1 port (damnit EA!), just remastering the sprites and BGs for a higher resolution would be enough.Quote:

The Saturn version had a bunch of other extra tracks as well. I'm not sure about the Sega Ages PS2 game.
The AGES one just had the original 3 tracks. I think the Saturn extra tracks were different than the 32X ones.
