Under the Radar SNES/Genesis Games

Not all Model 1 Genesis systems have great audio, not all Model 2 systems have horrible audio. I like when the techno nerds start blabbing about "for the best ____". When I play this stuff, I want it to look and sound the way it did when I was a kid playing it (which at the time of Sega was an RF hooked up to a mono 19 inch tv). I didn't know I was missing shit, because it was what it was and I loved it for what it was.
I wouldn't spend too much time or money worrying about Optimal Sound and Video. That's just me.

For a lot of people, myself included, playing older games is very much not a nostalgia thing. It's 2011. I can enjoy better AV cables (like, at least composite instead of RF), I can enjoy better controllers, and I can ignore shitty arcade ports in favor of good ones. I understand the appeal of nostalgia, but, man, it's not THAT great. I'd rather play stuff that's new to me.

Those games were designed for old-style composite video signals, though. They look worse without it. I'm with you on the sound thing though.

Also on the "this isn't about nostalgia" thing. Magnifiedplaid is looking for stuff he hasn't played before.

true dat. But he can get a lot of games he hasn't played for the cost of modification and transcoders and shit and still have a Very Fine experience.

I made sure to mention composite! I mean, are there techniques that are exclusive to RF that composite ruins? I haven't heard of any.

I disagree. Europe and Japan both had RGB, and the majority of these old systems used it, and even back then it was widely known that RGB was superior. Component isn't quite as good for these old systems, but it's the next best thing we have here. However, when they are displayed on monitors that can't display the proper resolution (namely PC monitors on emulators or modern HDTVs) they look like a huge steaming pile, no matter what connection is used.

However, SSJN makes a good point. Brighter colors and better sound don't make a game any more fun. I was happy playing my SNES and Genesis in RF back in the day because my 70/80's era TV couldn't do any better.

That reminds me. Are you using an HDTV, magnifiedplaid?

I still remember the day I got my 21" TV and was able to hook up the SNES through composite. Probably way more awesome than the day I got my HDTV and played my 360 in HD for the first time. /oldandjaded

Yes, all I have at my house right now is an HD-TV. I've had some mixed results with the picture quality. Some games haven't looked THAT bad, but Donkey Kong Country 2 looked so horrendous that it was almost unplayable.

Egad. If room isn't a factor, $50 can get you a Kick Ass SDTV off of craigslist.
