Nope, NOA was brilliant in changing the plug on that one to something that isn't standard.
I know I was warned that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist was very similar to Turtles in time on the SNES, but I couldn't help myself. I caved, and picked up a copy of Hyperstone Heist, for cheap, on Ebay.
I finally got the chance to play it last night, and honestly, it didn't disappoint me as much as I thought it would. IMO, it kind of played like a remixed version of Turtles in Time and Turtles 2: The Arcade game, both in terms of level design and game play mechanics...
On my first play through, I died on level 4 "The Gauntlet", where they make you fight all the games bosses in a row....really, it should have been pretty easy, but it was enough to knock me for a loop on my first play through.
The game is good, it's just kind of underwhelming after Turtles in Time. It plays a little differently though, and is a faster paced game as a result.
Plus, Tatsu!
Yes, the game is pretty fast paced...definitely Turtles in Time with a Turtles 2 or Turtles 3 pacing...I'm digging the shit out of it, but I'm sure playing it 10 years after Turtles in Time helps. If I played it and Turtles in Time back to back, when they were released, I'd probably be a little more underwhelmed.
Sorry in advance if those games have been mentioned already as I didn't read the entire thread... but Shinobi III is mandatory. Awesome level design, fluid controls, and pretty challenging on hard mode. It's a shame how shitty and irrelevant that franchise has become, because Shinobi III is IMO one of the finest games ever made.
I was always very fond of Beyond Oasis on the Genesis. It's a nice sorta-Zelda-like game where you use the powers of elemental spirits to progress through the world map, solve puzzles in dungeons, and sometimes aid you in battle. Pretty nice combat and big impressive bosses, though it's not a very difficult game overall. The sequel on the Saturn, on the other hand... ouch, what a hard game. Still, Beyond Oasis was a lot of fun and is one of my top Genesis games.
I also second/third/etc. the mentions of Wonder Boy 5/Monster World 3 (and the fan-translated WB6/MW4 if you don't mind playing on emulator). Great, great games, even today.
Ristar is also criminally underrated. It was way better than Sonic, IMO, though I probably won't get many people to agree with this.
Has anyone ever played Crusader of Centy? I only briefly touched it on emulator and it really seemed like an utterly shameless Zelda clone, but I never really gave it a chance. Worth playing?
I've heard of it. I've give it a go as the Genny lacked in action rpgs. I dig Shinobi 3 the horse riding sequence is epic. Weird playing it on the psp with graphical enhancements.
