GameWorks used to have one for a while. Pity they removed it.
Blegh. Unfortunately, Asteroids and Battlezone are the two Golden Age 'masterpieces' that I really can't stand playing.
Sqoon, do you just not like vector games in general or just those two games?
Some of my other favorite vector games are Omega Race(Midway), Black Widow(Atari), Star Trek(Sega), and Tempest(Atari).
Well, I just noticed that the two games were vector games.
But no, I don't dislike vector games and treat them as any other. Tempest is a favorite of mine, though that comes naturally since everybody loves that game (or at least they should).
UIC used to have an Asteroids Deluxe machine and I think it's the cabinet I put the most money into during my time there... or at least with the most consistency on a daily basis. I think it was NextGen in their first Top 100 of All list that described good Asteroids playing as something of a waltz, which is something I can relate to in this case. Asteroids is a good example of how a controlled situation can become haywire within a single second.
Of course nothing beats finding and playing the original machines for this... try as they might, MS arcade packs, Atari arcade packs, and new jack-of-all-trade cabinets still doesn't provide Asteroids the same way it was presented the first time.
Atari had some great Vector games back then. Have you ever played Red Baron. The game was pretty impressive for it's time. Imagine 3-d mountains, items you can blow up, and shooting down enemy Bi-Planes. One of the rare Atari classic's, that never took off, but should have.
Red Baron was bad ass back in the day. I expessilly love playing in the cockpit (sitdown) cabinet. Red Baron was definitly a standout game upon its release.
I love Asteroids DX. The arcade version with the projection display was too cool. I love old vector shooters. Even got a Vectrex. I can play those games for hours.
Although I never really clung to any of the games (of course I love Asteroids and Tempest a bit), I'm fascinated by the technology behind it (even though I don't know much about it).
