I didn't want to stink up the NES thread with this, but I found this article interesting and accurate in many ways, other than the complete misuse of "retro." He's nuts regarding digital distribution though. If all the vintage or antique games were available digitally legally, I'd have no use for any old hardware.
I haven't read it, but plan to. I'm with you to an extent regarding digitally, legally. I could steal every damn rom in the world and play them on w/e console, but I like playing on original hardware too, with all of the pros and cons that it entails.
I found I was just chasing the high when I was buying old games, and I stopped shortly after. I know there are some people who do love playing those old games, but that's not what is driving demand for these titles.
Also 20 years of culling the herd can do wonders for someone looking to re-enter the world of SNES or whatever. Sure the system looks great when you go back to all the A+++ games fondly remembered. It's not the entire story of the platforms though.
I mean, nobody will care about even just pretty good games like Sleeping Dogs in 20 years, but I bet they'll be playing Dark Souls. That changes ones' perception of a platform.
I like having a few old consoles around just for nostalgia and decoration.
They're my gaming equivalent of a coffee table book.
If I want to actually get into a game, I'll play it on my PC with a nice arcade stick.
I actually like games! Go figure. I'm sure there's also some nostalgia involved, but I play the stuff I buy and I swish it around my mouth and savor the taste.

I mean, there's definitely an element of "I can emulate this", but I like owning stuff I play and enjoy. The dude pretty much kicks off the article with what might as well be "I don't really like playing this stuff."

Usually the only thing I feel nostalgic about are games that I don't play anymore. I will play Doom today, but it's because it rocks. There's no game being made today like it, and if there is, show it to me.
Sooooo? I don't get what the article is getting at at first glance. Some people like to buy vintage shit................ and??? If they like it they like it. Did I miss something more profound? This just sounds like the author is bitter about getting caught up in nostalgia hype which is his/her own fault.
Emulating means squat to me. I can emulate every NES, Genesis, SNES, etc. game known to man, and I don't play them. My PC and Xbox are filled with ROMS that I use to take screen shots for reviews and articles, but I never play them. In contrast, I spent the entire weekend playing Earthbound Zero on my NES. Personally, I just prefer the original hardware.
Some people like emulating them, some like using real hardware, and some just like to look at what they bought without ever actually playing it. I'd wager the same can be said for things like music, movies, etc.
