UltraViolet Digital Copies

I wasn't too concerned about this until I realized I eventually want to buy a Blu-Ray player and ripping all those movies onto HDDs is going to cost me a lot in HDD buying and space-taking. Does anyone have any experience with the service?

I want something I can just buy, leave on some cloud, and watch wherever I am on whatever device I so choose. When I left for California earlier this year, I realized how many DVDs I purchased and had to throw away because I did not want to keep the clutter. I don't want to go through the same thing with Blu-Rays in another 10 years.

So, please, let me know what to expect and what's the best service if UltraViolet is not as good as it seems.

I've only used Amazon but they're fantastic. Not the greatest prices but I normally only buy stuff on sale. You can watch anything you've bought on any device with a Amazon Instant app by just logging in.

Does Amazon put their digital stuff on sale? And I see some of their movies are $14.99. Does that mean they're just standard definition or go up to HD?

There are prices for SD and HD and you have to pay close attention to which you're looking at. I just searched for The Avengers and it defaults to the SD price of $14.99 but if you click the blue bar up top that says "available in HD, etc..." it'll switch over to the HD version which is $19.99. Normally HD should be $5 more.

Gah! How annoying! That's so expensive, but I guess it's worth having them host it FOREVER AND EVER so I won't have to worry about physical media.

I hope they're better with this than they are with their music. You can only download music once. If you lose it after, you're boned.

Not true at all. I use their music store exclusively for my digital library. I have downloaded albums several times and sometimes on a friend's comp without a single problem. And now they also keep everything in the cloud and I can access it from my phone whenever I like.

Oh really? I remember about a year or two I bought an album through them and I had lost the hard drive I kept it on. I asked them if I could re-download and they said I had to purchase the album again. I pirated it and told them to suck my nuts.

I have Google Play house my music. It's just the easiest for me to keep around.

They stopped that. Everything you buy on their MP3 store gets shoved on your Amazon Cloud Drive.

Amazon instant is included in the cost of a prime membership.

Most major studios are on the Ultraviolet bandwagon, a pretty decent majority of blu-rays and many DVDs seem to come with an Ultraviolet copy as the standard now.

It's usually cheapest to wait out a sale for a physical copy with the UV copy than it is to just buy the UV copy directly. Doubly so if you just want to snag the code and resell the disc.
