I got all of the old tech/character/planets "Essential Guides" back around 96-98 and was up to date with everything (in a more bare bones way) until that point but fell behind as well. The Legacy comics (set 100+ years after the OT) was the last thing I got into. I read up on the SW wiki a little while ago and wasn't too keen on what they had done with the EU. The prequel stuff (Exar Kun era, Han Solo, etc...not the movies) and the stuff set in the immediate years after RotJ was overall pretty well done. The writers could have been a lot more creative after that. They took the EU too far in my opinion; killing characters like Chewbacca and just constantly introducing the next great new threat after the next. It kind of makes the victorious ending of RotJ pointless when you find that the characters are still consumed with constant and never ending conflict 40 years after the fact; never actually getting the peace that was supposed to come from defeating the Empire. It made sense in the immediate aftermath because obviously the Empire wasn't just going to go away after they lost the Emperor and the second Death Star.
That's why I could never really get into ongoing comic book series. I don't like the idea of milking storylines completely dry and never giving any sort of conclusive resolution.
